Marvel Reveals a New Team of Champions Debuting Next Year

As a seasoned gamer and Marvel Universe enthusiast with a decade of comic book collecting under my belt, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement at the prospect of diving into the new series, New Champions! The idea of reinventing teen heroes in the Marvel Universe is not only intriguing but also something I’ve been yearning for in my comics collection.

Following the playful hint of a fresh series centered around a team of teenage superheroes from Marvel, it’s been confirmed that the Champions franchise is making a comeback, titled New Champions. Last year, the launch of the New Champions Variant cover series gave fans an initial glimpse of a new roster of characters, presented as the secret auxiliaries of our beloved Marvel heroes. The increasing fan interest in these newcomers has resulted in their gradual inclusion into the primary Marvel universe across various titles over the past few months. Now, some of these characters will star in a new continuous series, though not all will follow the heroic path; instead, a few may choose to walk the villainous road.

The creators behind New Champions – writer Steve Foxe (known for his work on Spider-Woman and Timeslide) and artist Ivan Fiorelli (recognized from Daredevil: Woman Without Fear and Timeslide) – aim to redefine teenage superheroes within the Marvel Universe. The initial lineup of New Champions consists of Liberty, Hellrune, Moon Squire, and Cadet Marvel, who were previously part of a team called The Assembly in Foxe’s Spider-Woman series.

Foxe shared, “When I first laid eyes on the New Champions variations, my imagination immediately took flight, envisioning their potential backgrounds, abilities, and alias for these fictional sidekicks. Deciphering the cast from the covers was a unique creative experience unlike any other I’ve encountered. I am thrilled to introduce an entirely new lineup of Marvel heroes (and a few villains!) in New Champions, collaborating with Ivan Fiorelli, who seamlessly integrates each new character as if they’ve always been a part of the universe.

As a gaming enthusiast, I can hardly contain my excitement about delving into the New Champions! The prospect of introducing fresh blood into the Marvel Universe is simply thrilling, offering an opportunity to create something entirely novel. These young heroes each have their unique tales to unfold, and I eagerly anticipate watching them develop visually as the story progresses. Here’s hoping that readers will find our pages as captivating as I expect to find illustrating them!

Foxe expressed his longstanding desire to create a teen hero team in his work: “This is the period when everyone discovers their true selves, and incorporating Norse magic, high-speed punching, or unintentional gateways to hell into this self-discovery journey makes for a fantastic tale,” he concluded.

What is New Champions about?

WHO ARE THE NEW CHAMPIONS?

These four individuals – a group of kids whose paths were altered by Hydra, Scarlet Witch’s enigmatic protege, a jammed roller derby player under a curse, and a fugitive from Wakanda – don’t seem to share any commonalities. However, when the enigmatic abilities of Hellrune unexpectedly unite them, they’ll need to swiftly learn cooperation to avoid the vengeance of the Cult of Hela!

New Champions #1 goes on sale January 8, 2025.
