Marvel Reveals Eyes of Wakanda Plot Details From the MCU Black Panther Series

As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with a deep-rooted passion for all things Marvel, I can hardly contain my excitement for Disney+’s animated MCU series, “Eyes of Wakanda“. Having grown up watching the Black Panther films and immersing myself in the rich lore of Wakanda, this series promises to delve deeper into the history of the Hatut Zeraze, the warriors who have safeguarded the Kingdom and its precious resource, Vibranium.

The Hatut Zeraze are the long-standing guardians responsible for shielding Wakanda throughout all time: these are the warriors you’ll learn about in Disney+’s animated Marvel Cinematic Universe series titled Eyes of Wakanda, which is overseen by Ryan Coogler, director of Black Panther. This show will delve into their past, uncovering how they tirelessly defended the Kingdom of Wakanda and its invaluable resource – Vibranium, the scarcest metal on Earth and the most powerful material known to the universe.

Through the centuries, the Hatut Zeraze have worked tirelessly to prevent enemies of Wakanda from obtaining “Isipho” (as it’s known in Xhosa), a role similar to that of Vibranium in creating objects like Captain America’s shield, Vision’s body, Riri Williams’ Mark II Ironheart Armor, and Sam Wilson’s winged Captain America suit.

The four-episode event series from Marvel Animation focuses on the thrilling escapades of Wakandan warriors across history. These heroes embark on perilous missions to retrieve Vibranium artifacts stolen by Wakanda’s adversaries. They are known as the Hatut Zeraze, and this is their tale.

According to Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation, “Eyes of Wakanda” is an MCU series centered around the Black Panther spinoff. It delves into the history of Wakanda as portrayed by its special forces, the War Dogs, and Todd Harris is the one who brought this amazing show to life. That’s really cool!

Ryan Harris, who has worked as a storyboard artist for Marvel Studios on projects like “Black Panther,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” and “What If…?”, is now taking on the director’s role and serving as executive producer, alongside Nia DaCosta Winderbaum (“X-Men ’97”), Kevin Feige (“Deadpool & Wolverine”), Louis D’Esposito (“Black Panther”), and Zinzi Coogler (“Judas and the Black Messiah”). Additionally, Sev Ohanian (“Anthem”) and Kalia King (Sheba) are also part of this team. This group is working under Ryan Coogler’s Proximity Media, a company that signed a first-look deal with Disney in 2021, which includes the project “Eyes of Wakanda” (formerly known as “Kingdom of Wakanda”) and the live-action “Ironheart” series featuring Dominique Thorne.

The cartoon show covers multiple centuries, with an impressive cast including Winnie Harlow from “Grown-ish”, Cress Williams from “Black Lightning”, Patricia Belcher from “The Villains of Valley View”, Larry Herron from “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2”, Adam Gold from “Hogwarts Legacy”, Lynn Whitfield from “The Chi”, Jacques Colimon from “Fright Krewe”, Jona Xiao from “The Flash”, Isaac Robinson-Smith from “X-Men ’97”, Gary Anthony Williams from “Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur”, Zeke Alton from “Batman: Arkham Shadow”, Steve Toussaint from “House of the Dragon”, and Anika Noni Rose from “The Princess and the Frog”.

During the production of 2018’s “Avengers: Infinity War,” I floated an idea to Coogler and Feige, which included an exhilarating battle scene on Wakanda’s fields. As D23 highlighted, Coogler acknowledged my talent in storytelling, stating, “[Harris] has been instrumental in creating some of the most memorable action sequences in many of your beloved films, and a significant number in mine. His ideas and stories have always left me in awe. I knew that with him leading the charge as director or showrunner, the outcome would be nothing short of extraordinary, and it certainly has been.

The upcoming series will venture beyond Wakanda’s history, revealing the mystical city of K’un-Lun, one of the Seven Capital Cities of Heaven. This is a sanctuary for the legendary Iron Fist guardians. As creator Danny Harris puts it, “It’s a tribute to the power of a culture that stands firm and says ‘this is our boundary, do not cross it.’ Yet, they strive to be the best versions of themselves throughout history. We’ll explore characters who defy the norms, challenge the system, and ponder the impact on Wakanda and the world at large. These are the themes I’m eager to unfold as we journey through the series.

The multi-century saga will delve into significant junctures from the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) timeline, as Harris referred to them. Coogler further explained that the show provides a captivating depiction of one aspect of Wakanda’s society, known as the Hatut Zeraze, or the War Dogs. These characters bear the responsibility of maintaining Wakanda’s secrecy, and Todd has meticulously woven their stories throughout history by focusing on certain characters who faced the consequences of this secrecy.

The “Eyes of Wakanda” from Marvel Studios will make its debut on Disney+ on the 6th of August, 2025. This premiere falls between two other Marvel Animation series, “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” which airs on the 29th of January, and “Marvel Zombies” set for release on October 3rd.
