As a cinephile who’s spent countless hours immersed in the vibrant world of Marvel Comics, I can confidently say that the upcoming series, Deadpool/Wolverine, is shaping up to be an exciting addition to my collection. The dynamic duo of Deadpool and Wolverine has always been a winning combination, and their latest adventure promises to deliver all the action, humor, and wit we’ve come to expect from these iconic characters.
In the upcoming Marvel series, the dynamic duo from our previous co-headliners, Deadpool and Wolverine, are reuniting for another adventure. The combination of these two characters has consistently proven to be a hit, both in movies and comic books. Previously, their team-up was a box office success, while Marvel comics have featured them together in titles like “Deadpool & Wolverine: WWIII” and the “Weapon X-Traction” story. The next phase of their collaboration unfolds in the new ongoing series called “Deadpool/Wolverine“, which follows closely after their blockbuster film. Here, we offer a sneak peek into how this new storyline gets underway.
In an exclusive first look, ComicBook presents the debut issue of “Deadpool/Wolverine” written by Benjamin Percy and illustrated by Joshua Cassara, along with Guru-eFX on cover art and Joe Sabino handling letters. This collaboration brings back the dynamic duo of Deadpool and Wolverine, but it’s also a return for creators Percy and Cassara who previously teamed up to launch the “X-Force” series during the Krakoan era of X-Men and Percy also authored the ongoing “Wolverine” comic series.
The initial scene of Deadpool/Wolverine #1 opens as Deadpool gatecrashes a funeral for a mobster. In classic Deadpool style, he disguises himself as an old person using a walking cane to reach the coffin. There, Sven Sunguard, sporting his gleaming fangs that he often uses to bite off his adversaries’ body parts, is on display. These teeth are of interest to a black-market collector, and Deadpool eagerly accepts the reward for their acquisition. Meanwhile, Wolverine finds himself in a Canadian bar where a mutant is being bullied for supposedly cheating at darts. When a group of men begin attacking the mutant, Wolverine intervenes, readying his unyielding Adamantium claws.
Percy shared with IGN that Josh and he developed a strong friendship while working together on X-Force. When Josh moved to X-Men, it was tough for both of them, but the chance to work on a flagship title is too good to pass up. Josh did an incredible job on that series, and we’ve never stopped texting or meeting at conventions. We swap jokes (and lots of Arnold Schwarzenegger GIFs) like nobody’s business. I even helped his wife find one of those hard-to-find 12-foot Home Depot skeletons for Halloween, so we’ll both have an amazing celebration. To sum it up, we were both thrilled to reunite the team. Deadpool/Wolverine is like us jumping back on stage and playing our guitars with full energy while surrounded by smoke machines and fireworks again.
Percy mentioned that it seems like he’s just continuing what he’s always done with Wolverine, having not stopped writing him for Marvel since 2017 through the ‘Wolverine: The Long Night’ podcast. However, he emphasized that this is a new phase in Logan’s storyline. Despite the changes among the mutants, the series will embrace this new status quo.
The exclusive preview of Deadpool/Wolverine #1 is below. The issue goes on sale January 1, 2025.
