Marvel Reveals Scrapped Versions of Deadpool 3, Including Remaking One MCU Movie

As a cinephile with decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that the revelation about the aborted Deadpool/Thor: The Dark World mashup has left me utterly bewildered and somewhat amused. Can you imagine a scene where Chris Hemsworth is crying over his hammer while Deadpool quips something like “Hey, I lost my katana once, it was a real bromance-ender”?

Initially, the film that later turned into “Deadpool & Wolverine” underwent numerous conceptual changes during its production phase. Prior to Hugh Jackman agreeing to reappear as Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds and Marvel Studios brainstormed multiple possibilities to integrate Deadpool into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Some of the ideas for Deadpool’s first appearance in the MCU ranged from having Deadpool make cameo appearances in other MCU movies, to a direct remake of “Thor: The Dark World”.

It wasn’t a simple mistake. Executive producer Wendy Jacobson, during her appearance on Disney+’s documentary “Assembled: The Creation of Deadpool & Wolverine”, disclosed that one of the numerous concepts proposed for the fresh Deadpool series was grounded in the second Thor film.

Due to the successes of “Deadpool 1” and “Deadpool 2,” our ambitions are sky-high, and we’re determined to consistently outdo ourselves. This desire for continuous improvement was evident during some stages of early development, as Ryan (apparently) had a multitude of ideas, tossing everything he thought up against the proverbial wall. Jacobson shared this insight.

The other day, I was flipping through my notes, revisiting some old thoughts. Among them were some outrageous concepts, such as a scene-by-scene remake of Thor 2, featuring Deadpool up until the halfway mark, then transitioning to another location. This idea was part of our ‘Deadpool’s Deleted Scenes Extravaganza’, aiming to prove that he had been in the Marvel Cinematic Universe all along, but his scenes were cut and never seen because they ended up on the editing room floor. We were brainstorming why such a movie would even exist.

In this alternate concept, Deadpool was envisioned to undergo an adventure similar to that of Thor in “Thor: The Dark World,” at least during the initial portion of the film. The remaining half would’ve introduced a fresh narrative and provided a more suitable onboarding for Wade Wilson within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This potential scenario adds intrigue to the emotional “Thor crying” tease in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” as it hints at a greater shared screen time between these characters if this version had been realized.

Additionally, in the latest version of “Assembled”, Reynolds discussed several pitch concepts he had submitted to Marvel, among them was a low-budget, indie-style dramedy featuring Deadpool, played by Wade Wilson.

Reynolds stated, ‘I proposed a film idea for Sundance, not joking about a Marvel movie with a $4 million budget and no action scenes, but featuring a Deadpool costume. I threw around ideas of various sizes, big, small, everything in between. It felt like I’d covered the whole spectrum.’

It’s quite possible that the Deadpool movie at Sundance wouldn’t have earned as much as Deadpool and Wolverine, but given its small budget, it would undoubtedly have brought in a substantial profit.
