Marvel Revives the X-Men's Weirdest Villain in Major Reveal

As a gamer with over two decades of Marvel Comics under my belt, I must say, the latest twist in “X-Men: From the Ashes” has me utterly enthralled! The return of Sugar Man, one of the most bizarre and sinister villains from the X-Men roster, is a thrilling turn of events that I didn’t see coming.

The current reboot of Marvel’s X-Men series titled “From the Ashes” has taken an unexpected turn in issue #4. Fans are left reeling as the storyline unveils one of the most peculiar adversaries from the X-Men’s rogues gallery as the main antagonist for the new comic arc! Considering the broader context of X-Men #4, it may not be so surprising that this villain is resurfacing again.

WARNING: SPOILERS FOLLOW!

In issue #4 of the X-Men storyline, Cyclops leads his squad against a fresh adversary: Trevor Fitzroy and his group, the Upstarts. The enigmatic figure behind the creation of new mutants provides Fitzroy an opportunity to launch a high-profile attack against the X-Men and other mutant groups, by declaring that he and the Upstarts are ready to eliminate them. Given this personal affront, Cyclops’s team decides to confront the Upstarts head-on, aiming to prevent them from finding and eliminating a newly detected mutant before it’s too late.

Magic guides Beast, Juggernaut, and Tempus squad towards Detroit, as they pursue the young mutant, Jennifer Starkey, who has been cornered by the Upstarts. The ensuing conflict ends with the X-Men emerging victorious, allowing them to return Jennifer to their Alaskan base for treatment. Fitzroy retreats to his sanctuary, believing he’s won the public relations battle by portraying the fight as a triumph for the Upstarts on social media; however, his superior, who goes by The Sugar Man, contradicts him, expressing dissatisfaction with this narrative spin.

In issue #4 of X-Men, it appears that Sugar Man is resentful towards others for transforming humans into mutants, and he requested Fitzroy to secure a live specimen for his experiments. As his assistant couldn’t fulfill the task, we can infer that Sugar Man may take matters into his own hands.

Marvel’s Sugar Man Explained

Marvel Revives the X-Men's Weirdest Villain in Major Reveal

Originally introduced by Marvel in 1995 during the “Age of Apocalypse” crossover event, Sugar Man served as a malevolent character. In this alternate timeline, Charles Xavier never formed the X-Men due to his untimely death, allowing Apocalypse’s rule to flourish. Magneto and Rogue led their own X-Men group, which included younger mutants like Shadowcat and Colossus. One of these squads, named “Generation Next,” was given a perilous mission by Magneto: infiltrate the Seattle Core slave camp to rescue Illyana, Colossus’ sister, from the camp and its demonic overseer, Sugar Man. During this mission, Colossus made immense sacrifices, losing nearly everyone on his squad to save his sister. In a final showdown, Sugar Man feigned death by using his mutant power of size/mass manipulation to shrink and conceal himself within Colossus’ costume. Upon the conclusion of the “Age of Apocalypse,” Sugar Man was among the characters that transitioned into the main Marvel 616 Universe.

Ever since then, Sugar Man has proven himself as one of the X-Men’s most malevolent adversaries, involved in subjugating and experimenting on Genosha’s mutates; rejoining his original timeline during the Age of Apocalypse to serve under the Hierarch of Apocalypse, Weapon Omega (the AoA Wolverine); and performing sinister scientific research on mutants, even attempting to breed a new generation of mutants.

Previously believed to be deceased, the Sugar Man made an unexpected reappearance in the 2020 edition of Amazing Spider-Man. Given his ability to regenerate and history of evading death, it wasn’t long until the Sugar Man resurfaced again.
