As a long-time Marvel fanatic who has witnessed the evolution of the universe from comic books to movies and now video games, I must say, the developers of Marvel Rivals have truly outdone themselves. The inclusion of a meme reference to an age-old Moon Knight saga not only demonstrates their attention to detail but also their keen understanding of the fanbase’s sense of humor.
The game Marvel Rivals boasts numerous intriguing nods to the Marvel Universe’s rich history, spanning from comics to the movies, and it seems even memes are part of the mix! Reddit users have pointed out that Moon Knight’s plot in Marvel Rivals has an allusion to a popular internet meme dating back to 2018. In Moon Knight’s heroic tale, the game discloses that Dr. Doom is planning to release hordes of vampires. To thwart Doom’s plans, Khonshu enlists Moon Knight once more. When Khonshu inquires about Moon Knight’s knowledge on vampires, the hero states he is owed money by Dracula.
For those not aware of the connection, it refers back to a modified comic panel from Solo Avengers #3, initially posted on the Moon Knight-Core Facebook page. In the original comic, Moon Knight is exploring Shroud’s castle, and there’s a scene of him walking down a staircase. However, in the fan-edited panel, Moon Knight’s inner monologue has been changed to depict him pursuing Dracula instead, with Moon Knight vocally asserting that the vampire owes him some cash. This meme has spread widely over time and inspired other altered panels where Moon Knight persists in his quest for repayment from Dracula.
The game Marvel Rivals is quite nonsensical, yet it demonstrates the developers’ dedication to the game’s storyline. Each character in the playable lineup has a detailed profile accessible from the main menu. While the primary profile provides a brief background about the character, there’s also an individual Hero Story that delves into their role within the broader narrative. This is where we found information on Moon Knight. These Hero Stories are surprisingly rich and filled with fascinating Marvel references. For instance, in Moon Knight’s story, the character ponders why Khonshu has tasked him with dealing with vampires instead of Blade. Khonshu implies that “he is currently unavailable,” which could mean that Blade might be included in the roster in the future.
It may strike you as unusual to come across a meme in Marvel Rivals, but it’s not the first time internet culture has influenced a Marvel production. For instance, in X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), filmmakers incorporated a line used by the Juggernaut from a popular viral video into the movie. Similarly, Marvel’s Midnight Suns game made a nod to the “it’s Morbin’ Time” meme that took off around the Morbius film release. Essentially, there have been past examples of this kind of crossover, making us curious about other potential hidden references yet to be discovered.
