On January 10th, when Season 1 of Marvel Rivals begins, gamers can anticipate the debut of Reed, Sue, Ben, and Johnny, collectively recognized as the Fantastic Four. These heroes will initially appear in white and blue attire, but players will also have a chance to acquire comic-inspired variants. Notably, Mr. Fantastic’s design will be influenced by The Maker, while Invisible Woman will take on her Malice appearance. Fans who enjoy a more villainous interpretation of Reed and Sue may find these designs particularly intriguing!
If you’re not well-versed with Marvel comics, let me fill you in: The Maker has been a significant villain for quite some time now. Contrasting with his counterpart from the main universe (616), the Reed Richards from the Ultimate Universe initially was a hero. However, this particular Reed eventually transformed into a villain and assumed a darker persona. After the Secret Wars event, The Maker joined the 616 universe for a while. In the latest Ultimate Universe comics, he’s been the main antagonist, orchestrating events that have left the world devoid of heroes. Given the increasing popularity of The Maker in recent years, it seems logical to incorporate his character into the Marvel Rivals game!
Although the character known as the Maker is quite recent, Malice was once a short-lived persona assumed by Sue Storm during John Byrne’s run on the Fantastic Four in the ’80s. Psycho Man’s manipulation of her mind caused Sue to adopt a villainous role as Malice, the Mistress of Hate. Over time, she returned to her usual self. Since then, the Malice identity has been mentioned occasionally but hasn’t played a significant role in Marvel Comics compared to the Maker. However, it’s a striking appearance for Sue, and having this alternate persona adds depth to her character in games like Marvel Rivals.
After checking out some alternate costumes for Reed and Sue, it’s exciting to anticipate the unveiling of additional designs for Ben and Johnny. The Fantastic Four have a rich history dating back to 1961, which includes many distinctive costumes throughout their decades-long existence. In the ’90s, the Thing donned a metal helmet after a fight with Wolverine left his face damaged. This could be an option for Ben Grimm’s new appearance, or they might opt for his redesign from the MC2 comics. Johnny Storm has sported several costumes over time, but the frequency of his “flamed on” appearances in Marvel Rivals may impact how easily those looks can be implemented.
