Marvel Rivals: Who Is Jeff The Shark and Why Do Fans Love Him?

As a long-time Marvel enthusiast who has seen it all, from the early days of Stan Lee to the modern marvels of today, I must say that Jeff the Shark has truly captured my heart! This lovable land shark, who started as a one-off creation, has evolved into a beloved character with an incredible journey across the Marvel Universe.

If you’ve been playing the popular hero shooter from NetEase called Marvel Rivals, chances are you’ve encountered the charming character known as Jeff, the land shark – be it him healing you during intense battles or knocking you and your teammates off the map for multiple eliminations (yes, I’m guilty too!). Interestingly, Jeff has been around for some time, but his introduction to Marvel Rivals has skyrocketed his popularity. For those newcomers to Jeff’s universe, here’s a comprehensive guide to everyone’s beloved land shark.

The Origin

Since 2019, Jeff has been a vital component in the Marvel Universe, debuting in West Coast Avengers Vol. 3, issue 7. The duo of writer Kelly Thompson and artist Daniele Di Nicuolo is responsible for bringing this character to life, as they initially conceived him as one of M.O.D.O.K.’s creations designed to attack Santa Monica. Originally, the land sharks were meant to be a temporary threat confined to just one issue.

In her Substack post, Thompson elaborated on the factors that resulted in the creation of Jeff. She pointed out the moment she spotted the adorable little shark lurking in the backdrop of a larger battle scene’s splash image. “Initially, I had intended for the landsharks to be a one-time addition for the initial story, a fun element to fight,” Thompson explained. “However, in Caselli’s stunning artwork, I noticed this anxious landshark in the background. This fellow was clearly ANXIOUS. Extremely anxious. It seemed as though he didn’t want to be there at all. And I found myself unable to shake the image of him from my mind,” Thompson wrote.

Initially, an anxious sea creature known as Jeff the Landshark met Thompson’s charming felines, The Monarch and Clive. This encounter marked the full development of Jeff the Landshark. In this comic book installment, Gwenpool informs Hawkeye that she intends to bring Jeff home with them. Hawkeye initially objects, but eventually warms up to the idea, and from then on, Jeff quickly adapted and started his new life.

Across The Universe

Jeff develops a strong bond with Gwenpool and temporarily joins the West Coast Avengers. Jeff’s relationship with Gwenpool was more than just friendship; he was particularly watchful over her, especially during battles against formidable opponents like the Hulk. However, their bond wasn’t limited to friendship. Later, Gwen departs Jeff with Deadpool, which results in an amusing series of events that eventually sees Deadpool reign as the Monster King on Staten Island.

At that period, Jeff served as the King’s beloved pet and assisted Wade and Elsa Bloodstone on multiple occasions. Among these instances was during the Knull assault, resulting in a brief symbiote possession of Jeff, and regrettably biting off Deadpool’s arm. Elsa then assumed guardianship of Jeff, which continued until the events portrayed in “It’s Jeff.

In this storyline, Kate Bishop assumes the role as guardian for Jeff, leading him on humorous journeys throughout the Marvel universe while crossing paths with a variety of iconic Marvel characters. “It’s Jeff” covers the complete run of the Marvel Infinity comics up to issue 12, and “It’s Jeff: The Jeff-Verse” compiles issues 13 through 24 from those exciting adventures.

Currently, Jeff is aiding his Marvel Rivals team, and fans of Jeff have an opportunity to obtain a fresh skin for him during the Marvel Rivals Winter Festivity commencing on December 20th. This event not only unveils a new Winter Splash Festival mode for Jeff (which features 4 vs 4 gameplay similar to Splatoon), but it also enables players to collect temporary items such as Jeff’s Cuddly Fuzzlefin costume. You can view the complete trailer for the winter festivity above.
