An intriguing example to analyze is the Marvel series on Netflix. As the Marvel Cinematic Universe was dominating cinemas with one blockbuster after another, the decision-makers decided to extend their success by granting Netflix, the leading streaming service at that time, a valuable opportunity. With this, Netflix began creating shows centered around street-level superheroes such as Jessica Jones and Daredevil. Initially, these shows were highly successful, offering a unique experience compared to the MCU films while also maintaining connections to the broader universe in subtle ways. Unfortunately, this prosperity didn’t last indefinitely, and eventually, Netflix decided to discontinue the entire project.
For a brief moment, it seemed as though the Netflix era was fading into oblivion, but then Charlie Cox’s Daredevil resurfaced in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin reappeared not long after in Hawkeye. Nowadays, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has warmly welcomed back elements from Netflix’s franchise, such as Jon Bernthal’s Punisher and Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones. However, one character that Marvel Studios is being particularly patient about bringing back, despite hinting at it, is Luke Cage (Mike Colter).
The MCU Isn’t Hiding the Fact That Luke Cage Is Around
It’s yet undecided how much of Netflix’s storyline the Marvel Cinematic Universe will incorporate. The first season of Daredevil: Born Again appears to keep the events from the third Netflix season, referring to FBI agent Ray Nadeem’s unfortunate death and Bullseye’s chaos. Despite a major creative transformation that places more emphasis on characters from the Netflix series rather than new ones, the Netflix storyline is being used again. One of the ways Born Again emphasizes this is by making references to Luke Cage’s club, Harlem’s Paradise, on a billboard in Times Square.
In the second season of Luke Cage’s standalone series, he assumes ownership of Mariah Dillard’s business following her demise. This twist is peculiar given that Luke Cage perceives himself as a hero; however, he thinks he can shield his community, Harlem, from harm by maintaining control over the criminal enterprise. Some of Cage’s associates are doubtful about this strategy, with Misty Knight even warning she would apprehend him if he strays too far. Despite these reservations, Luke Cage remains resolute, and as Season 3 of Jessica Jones unfolds, it seems that Harlem is thriving under his leadership. This turn of events benefits Luke Cage significantly, and if Marvel handles the situation skillfully, it could also benefit Daredevil in the future.
Daredevil: Born Again Creates a Clear Path for Luke Cage’s MCU Debut
Born Again” ends with the good guys suffering a significant setback as Mayor Wilson Fisk successfully implements his strategy to suppress vigilantes. His task force captures or eliminates anyone who defies him, including Swordsman and the Punisher. However, Daredevil eventually finds the motivation to rally a team to resist him. This team, although not as legendary as the 1927 Yankees, consists of current and former cops, as well as Karen Page. With just a few phone calls, Daredevil manages to galvanize his group into action.
Jessica Jones has set sail for her return in Born Again Season 2, with Krysten Ritter set to reprise her iconic role. Given the dynamic between her and Cage, it seems inevitable that he’ll soon don his suit once more and leap into action. He might even bring along a few of his colleagues, like Sugar, to join the fight. This could provide an opportunity for these ne’er-do-wells to aid New York instead of harming it by lending a hand. Their task won’t be simple, considering Fisk’s ever-growing influence, but Cage has proven time and again that he’s a game-changer; the MCU simply needs to take action and let him demonstrate this.
Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 is streaming on Disney+.
