James Gunn has made it clear: Thor was never going to be in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

An Unexpected Endgame Edit

In a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly, the movie’s director and screenwriter clarified that, although the ending of Avengers: Endgame hinted at Thor joining the Guardians, there were actually no plans to include Thor in the film.

In the script notes, Gunn explained, “I made it clear that I won’t include him. I have no desire to work with Thor in the Guardians. I find the character intriguing, but I’m unsure about how to portray him effectively. I enjoy watching his movies and appreciate Chris Hemsworth as an actor, but I struggle with understanding how to write for that character.

Viewers recall that “Endgame” concluded with Thor joining the Guardians aboard the Milano, hinting at a potential crossover event. However, as per Gunn, this scene’s inclusion was an unexpected twist.

Thankfully, since James Gunn was dealing with an unresolved storyline in Thor: Love and Thunder, director Taika Waititi intervened by incorporating the Guardians briefly into his movie. This enabled Gunn to proceed with Vol. 3 according to his preferred direction.

The Complications of Post-Credit Scenes

In addition to the EW interview, Gunn also utilized the opportunity to ponder over how after-credit scenes might intricate long-term storytelling, drawing on his own encounter with Adam Warlock. This character, portrayed by Will Poulter, initially made a cameo in the post-credits scene of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which Gunn subsequently acknowledged was introduced too soon.

In simpler terms, the creator stated that while they had planned to introduce Adam Warlock in “Guardians 2”, they didn’t necessarily anticipate the extent of the setup. He warned about the potential risks of using post-credits scenes primarily for setting up future content, as it can sometimes limit creative freedom. He found it challenging to incorporate Adam Warlock into “Guardians 3”, but he enjoyed working with the actor and the character nonetheless. However, he admitted that Adam Warlock felt like a square peg in a round hole within the context of the Guardians of the Galaxy series.

In the end, Gunn’s choice to focus Vol. 3 on the main Guardians team for the climax of the trilogy made its ending more deeply moving. It also mirrored his approach as a storyteller, an aspect he now applies in his position as co-head of DC Studios.

How These Lessons Will Shape Superman

In the same interview for “EW”, Gunn also disclosed that his forthcoming “Superman” movie would include a thoughtfully designed post-credit scene.

He mentioned that there’s a connection to his own errors during his tenure at Marvel, cautioning, “It’s important to be mindful of such situations.” Expressing his desire to engage with fans, he plans to include something special in the end credits for viewers to discover, as he believes it adds value. He also expressed fondness for his team and encouraged viewers to stay until the end to learn who the key crew members were.
