Marvel Shocker: Gambit’s Epic Takedown of Omega Mutant Revealed!

The latest installment of Ultimate Wolverine, issue #3, continues to deliver an exciting and unique take on the Wolverine saga. This time around, we delve deeper into Wolverine’s past and the ongoing struggles of the Opposition against the Eurasian Alliance. In addition, readers are introduced to key characters such as Ultimate Gambit, Kitty Pryde, and Black Widow, who hold significant roles not only in the comic universe but also in Wolverine’s storyline from the 616 universe.

Intriguingly, it is revealed that Ultimate Gambit serves as the leader of the Opposition. As the story unfolds, we learn the reason why Mikhail Rasputin, the older brother of Colossus and Magik, isn’t among the Eurasian Alliance leaders: he was killed by Gambit a year ago in an incident known as “the Mikhail Massacre.” This shocking revelation sheds new light on several aspects of the story.

Generally, Gambit’s abilities have been comparable to that of Omega-class mutants among hardcore fans, yet he rarely showcases such immense power. In stark contrast, Mikhail Rasputin possesses the extraordinary ability to manipulate reality, a trait only found in the most powerful mutants on Earth. The Rasputin brothers are all potent beings, but Mikhail stands out for his exceptional strength among them. He may not be widely recognized by many fans, but Mihail boasts an intriguing background within Marvel’s main universe (616).

Mikhail Rasputin’s Past Is Filled with Tragedy & That’s Molded Him Into a Dangerous Mutant

Originally from the same collective farm as his siblings, Mikhail Rasputin later served in the Russian air force before becoming a cosmonaut. Unfortunately, this space voyage led to his misfortune when he was trapped in a dimensional rift and ended up on an alien world. The locals welcomed him, including a princess named Tra-Mai-A-Zath whom he married. However, her father, Avatar, was a tyrant, leading Mikhail into the midst of a civil war. In one of these conflicts, another dimensional rift appeared and Mikhail used his powers to seal it, resulting in an enormous explosion that claimed the lives of hundreds, including Tra-Mai-A-Zath. Stricken with grief, Mikhail withdrew from society but was eventually found by the X-Men after they were drawn into the same rift. Fortunately, Colossus managed to rescue him, and when the X-Men escaped, they took Mikhail along. The traumatic events left a deep mark on Mikhail’s psyche. Years later, as the Morlocks stirred up trouble once more, Mikhail employed his powers to transfer them into another dimension, providing a brighter existence for these outcasts outside of the sewers.

In this dimension, time seemed to pass more quickly, leading Mikhail to instruct Marrow and the Gene Nation on their ways, before sending them back to Earth with the intention of causing chaos for mankind. At one juncture, Mikhail attempted to abduct Storm, intending to make her his queen by force. However, when she threatened him with death, he released her. Subsequently, Mikhail made an attempt to summon his sister Magik from the past, cautioning her about her Legacy Virus and promising a cure. Yet, he aimed to employ her powers to heal his own infection, which he had inadvertently passed onto her, thereby ensuring her demise in the future.

Later on, he amassed greater power and aimed to revive his sister by drawing Colossus and Marrow into his realm. The X-Men duo, Colossus and Marrow, understood that Mikhail was under the influence of an enigmatic entity and attempted to resist it, inadvertently hurling them both through a portal. However, Colossus managed to seize his brother, transporting him back home. Mikhail would depart once more during the confrontation against Apocalypse in “The Twelve”, only to reappear alongside Mister Sinister, who sought to eliminate the Rasputins. In this instance, Mikhail defied Sinister and was banished again. During Krakoa’s era, Mikhail resurfaced once more, aligning with the Russians in their resistance against Krakoa and asserting control over Colossus. Unfortunately for him, this situation proved disastrous as Colossus eventually managed to free himself from Mikhail’s influence, resulting in the death of his elder brother.

Even as Powerful as Gambit Is, Mikhail Would Be a Difficult Kill For Him

As a passionate cinephile, I’ve always been fascinated by the character evolution of Mikhail Rasputin. Initially, manipulating dimensional rifts seemed like an arduous task for him, but with time, it became as natural as breathing. When he reappeared in the Krakoa Era, his power level was at its peak, making Colossus’s feat of killing him all the more noteworthy. Although Earth-6160 differs significantly from Earth-616, I can’t help but imagine that the Maker would have ensured Mikhail was in top form before placing him as leader of the Eurasian Alliance, ready to wield his powers with unmatched might.

In issue #3 of Ultimate Wolverine, the Mikhail Massacre is mentioned twice, yet its details remain unexplored. It appears that Ultimate Gambit has employed his abilities to trigger massive explosions at additional sites since Mikhail’s demise. Although Mikhail possesses significant power – as seen in the Age of Apocalypse, where he could generate rocky skin – if Gambit’s assault came unexpectedly, perhaps by undermining the building foundations, and Mikhail was caught off guard, it wouldn’t be surprising that he could defeat even the strongest Rasputin.
