As a cinephile penning my thoughts, I can’t help but reminisce about the intriguing production of ‘Thunderbolts‘. While it’s now common knowledge that these heroes are essentially the New Avengers within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, during filming, this was a tightly guarded secret. In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, Florence Pugh, one of the stars in the film, shared fascinating insights about the movie’s final scene.
You see, multiple takes were filmed for this climactic moment where Valentina Allegra de Fontaine unveils Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to the world. One version, involving extras playing enthusiastic spectators, depicted Val bestowing a different name upon the team. After the extras had taken their bows, the authentic scene was then shot – the one where Valentina officially introduces the New Avengers to the MCU.
In a different take, Pugh mentioned, “She exclaimed, ‘The New Thunderbolts!'” Sparking excitement among everyone present. Later, they removed all the background actors and filmed just Julia Louis-Dreyfus delivering that specific line, making it quite an interesting moment.
In the finale of The New Avengers, they unveiled the secret hidden within the asterisk in the Thunderbolts* title, which had sparked heated discussions among fans for months. The movie’s end-credits sequences focus on the consequences of the characters’ altered statuses, hinting at a future court case involving Sam Wilson, who has formed his own Avengers squad separately. Additionally, there’s a sequence showing various news broadcasts responding to this revelation, as well as a comical segment featuring Red Guardian attempting to peddle New Avengers cereal.

It’s not surprising that the New Avengers will play crucial roles in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The cast of Thunderbolts, including Pugh, Harbour, Lewis Pullman, Wyatt Russell, Sebastian Stan, and Hannah John-Kamen, are all set to return for Avengers: Doomsday. In this film, not only will the New Avengers be present, but also Sam Wilson’s Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men.
Marvel is known for guarding spoilers carefully, and this was behind their decision to film various endings for the final scene of the movie Thunderbolts. The studio wanted to keep a surprise twist under wraps before it was revealed to the public. Interestingly, soon after the release of Thunderbolts, Marvel openly acknowledged and promoted this twist as part of its marketing strategy. Just a few days into the film’s cinema run, the title was changed to *The New Avengers, with new posters to match. Disney justified this sudden change, but some fans felt it would have been more effective to keep the secret until later in the series.
One significant aspect of the Thunderbolts conclusion involves Yelena warning Val that the New Avengers now have control over her, hinting at the potential exposure of Val’s hidden past. It will be intriguing to observe if this storyline is further developed in a future MCU production. Despite not being included in the confirmed cast for Avengers: Doomsday during Marvel’s March live stream, there are still upcoming casting announcements, suggesting that Val could potentially find a role. Her relationship with the New Avengers offers an engaging and complex narrative, and it would be disappointing if this aspect is not fully explored within the broader Multiverse Saga.
