2022 saw the launch of Marvel’s counterpart to mobile card games, aptly named “Marvel Snap“. This game allows players to amass digital trading cards showcasing characters from across the Marvel universe, and then engage in card battles with them. Having just completed its third year, the game continues to provide regular updates adding fresh cards to keep the strategy diverse. In many ways, it resembles “Marvel Rivals“, expanding beyond characters made famous by the MCU while still featuring popular figures. However, a recent controversy has arisen around one such character from the MCU, Black Panther’s M’baku, as an artist claims that their fan art was copied by “Marvel Snap“.
In Marvel Snap, while each deck comprises only 12 cards, there’s an impressive variety of over 400 different cards to collect in the game. With so many stunning card designs at your fingertips, it’s simple to lose track of time and explore every nook and cranny of the game. This vast array of cards might be the reason a talented artist only recently noticed that a card from 2022 strongly resembles fan art they created in 2018. The piece in question features M’Baku, whose popularity surged due to his significant role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Black Panther movie.
Today I stumbled upon an unexpected surprise while scrolling through old artwork – a fanart of Black Panther’s M’baku that I created back in 2018. It seems someone else has taken my design and used it in Marvel Snap without giving credit! Can you believe it? Funny enough, for the past few months, I’ve been reaching out to Marvel Snap, hoping to join their team, but I haven’t received a single reply!

The post originates from the account @thatjaykart, who posted their 2018 fan art of M’Baku alongside a pixel art card depicting the same Marvel character. The pictures show that the fan art was made 7 years ago, while the Marvel Snap version appeared in 2022. When viewed together, it seems that the Marvel Snap version doesn’t hold up well compared to @thatjaykart’s original work. In fact, Jay emphasizes in a subsequent comment that “the similarities are so obvious that I don’t even need to point them out.”
Marvel Snap Allegations Raise Concerns About Artwork
As a gamer, I’ve got to say, the character on the Marvel Snap card looks awfully familiar. Same pose, similar outfit, holding the same staff, and sporting a pixelated version of the exact same smirk. The colors are slightly off, and the background on the card isn’t quite the original art, but it’s the pixel art style that gives it away. Yet, it’s tough to deny that the image on the right wasn’t heavily influenced by the artwork on the left. If the dates in this post are correct, Marvel Snap might want to come clean about how that art ended up in their game.
It’s not a new observation that some pixel art cards in the game resemble artwork found online, which has raised concerns about potential plagiarism. In response to a query about stolen art in Marvel Snap, several users presented evidence. Even newer additions like Wiccan and Sentry have been accused of being copied or traced from fan art depicting those same characters.

To put it simply, a Reddit post from three months ago features pixel art cards from Marvel Snap that closely resemble fan-created Marvel artwork. Since fan art doesn’t belong to the original artist because it’s based on pre-existing intellectual property, it could be perfectly fine for Marvel to utilize these works as inspiration. However, the main issue isn’t legality but morality. Most artists believe it’s inappropriate for Marvel Snap to use these creations without giving credit to their original creators.
To this point, Marvel Snap has not released any official statements concerning the accusations. Yet, in a question posed on the Marvel Snap discord, a representative from game developer Second Dinner replied briefly, “We’re aware of these reports and we’re investigating it.” This response was disclosed on March 17th, and no additional updates have been given since then.
