In all probability, when James Gunn was casting for his movies, he might have thought, “This task seems fit for Sean Gunn.” Apart from his role as Kirk in Gilmore Girls, the multitalented actor is arguably most recognized for portraying both Ravager Kraglin and the on-set Rocket Raccoon in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and the Avengers sequels Infinity War and Endgame. Additionally, he took on two roles in The Suicide Squad (2021), voicing Weasel and making a cameo as Calendar Man, and provided voices for both Weasel and G.I. Robot in the Creature Commandos animated series that paved the way for the new DC Universe, which officially launched with the Superman movie on July 11, 2021.
At Canada’s Northern Fancon (as reported by DCFilmNews), Gunn mentioned that he recently asked James if it would be accurate to claim participation in the new Superman movie. James responded, “You can say you’re somewhat involved in the movie.” Therefore, according to Gunn, he is somewhat a part of the upcoming Superman film.
According to industry reports, there were indications that Gunn would portray Maxwell Lord. However, it was not certain if he would debut in Creature Commandos, Superman, or any other project currently under development at DC Studios.
In this extensive ensemble of characters in ‘Superman’, Maxwell Lord, portrayed by Gunn, stands alongside David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Other heroes joining the cast include Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and Nathan Fillion playing Green Lantern Guy Gardner. This character is a main figure from the 1987 Justice League comic series written by Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis, and Kevin McGuire.
In issue #1 (renamed Justice League International from issue #7), Maxwell Lord IV made his debut, seemingly overseeing the newly established Justice League of America from behind the curtains. This affluent businessman declared himself as the official spokesperson for the revamped JLA. Starting with issue #7, he transformed the team into a UN-approved international peacekeeping group, allowing them to function autonomously with embassies situated worldwide.
It became clear later on that Lord had been controlled by the Flash villain Kilg%re, who was electro-mechano-organic in nature. After being liberated from Kilg%re’s control, Lord was transformed into a cyborg. In the comic book series “Formerly Known as the Justice League,” published in 2003 by Giffen, DeMatteis, and McGuire (a sequel to the JLI), Lord created another team: the “Super Buddies.” This team included Ted Kord’s Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, Mary Marvel, Elongated Man, Captain Atom, and Fire.
Following the events of “Infinite Crisis”, it was unveiled that the Lord was secretly overseeing Earth’s superhumans and costumed heroes. His intention was to transfer control of Earth’s fate from beings posing as humans, to actual human beings. As the covert leader of Checkmate, known as the “Black King”, he seized control of the satellite Brother Eye and deployed an army of OMAC (Observational Metahuman Activity Constructs) as his response to the global metahuman population.
Superman flies into theaters July 11.
