As a long-time Marvel fan and someone who has followed the journeys of these iconic characters since their earliest appearances, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension at the possibility of Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans returning to the MCU.
I’ve picked up on some buzz about Marvel Studios head honcho, Kevin Feige, discussing the prospect of Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans rejoining the comic book saga.
In the finale of Avengers: Endgame in late 2019, both characters departed, leaving a significant emotional impact on fans as they exited.
In an interview with DiscussingFilm, the producer shared that carefully bringing back Deadpool and Wolverine after giving them a significant farewell is possible based on their past successes.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I ponder over this challenge: How can we pay homage to the past while innovating in an impressive manner? This question has kept me and my team occupied for the past two-and-a-half years as we work on reimagining Wolverine’s story.
Based on my experience as a long-time fan of the X-Men universe and having followed the development of Wolverine’s character throughout various movies and comic books, I am thrilled to see that the creators have found a way to bring Wolverine back to life on screen. Hugh Jackman’s iconic portrayal of the character in “Deadpool & Wolverine” is a testament to the fact that it can be done with great care and respect for the source material. I am excited about what lies ahead, but we’ll just have to wait and see how the story unfolds.
Jackman originally planned to give up the Wolverine character after the 2017 film Logan, which earned several Oscar nominations. However, Reynolds, famous for his role as Deadpool, successfully persuaded him to change his mind.
Despite this, the actor made it clear that the upcoming role didn’t mean the occurrences in “Logan” would be erased from the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s continuity. The intricate web of time-travel manipulations in the MCU would serve to explain away the apparent discrepancy.
In December 2022, during an interview on SiriusXM, Jackman explained that the ability to travel through time in the Marvel universe is due to a specific device they possess. Essentially, this technological advancement allows them to move freely between different timelines.
Based on my personal perspective and experiences as a dedicated fan of the “Logan” timeline, I’m glad that we don’t have to tinker with it. I believe this decision is important not just for me but also for other fans who value the original narrative.
In relation to this, Feige had made it clear in an interview with Vanity Fair that he would not alter Tony Stark’s selfless act at the end of Avengers: Endgame, completing his story arc as Iron Man.
The producer assured us, “We’ll cherish that instant and won’t alter it in any way. After putting in so much effort for numerous years, we don’t wish to rewind time and change it.”
Downey Jr has expressed a willingness to rejoin the Marvel universe given favorable conditions. An intriguing prospect based on comic lore is the creation of an artificial intelligence Stark, intended to take over following Downey’s demise.
Deadpool & Wolverine is released in cinemas on Thursday 25th July 2024.
