Marvel Thwips Up New Look at the Relaunched Amazing Spider-Man #1

In other words, when a title boasts significant power, it often undergoes considerable change while still maintaining its core essence. For instance, Marvel’s upcoming revamp of “The Amazing Spider-Man” might seem like a new beginning with a fresh #1 issue (available from April 9), a new volume number (Vol. 7), and a new artist (Pepe Larraz, who has worked on X-Men and Blood Hunt). However, it’s primarily a renumbering rather than a complete restart. This new phase will not only bring back some of Spider-Man’s iconic adversaries, including one villain unseen for over seven years, but also be penned by Joe Kelly, who has previously written Spider-Man/Deadpool and is currently the Amazing Spider-Man scribe. The artwork will be handled by Larraz and John Romita Jr., renowned for their work on various volumes of Amazing Spider-Man, including Vol. 1, the J. Michael Straczynski-written Vol. 2, and the recently relaunched Vol. 6 under Zeb Wells.

Besides a thrilling cover by Larraz, the upcoming issue #1 of Amazing Spider-Man in 2025 will see the return of Eisner-nominated artist Simone Di Meo to Marvel Comics after his stints on DC’s Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and Batman and Robin. A variant cover by Di Meo, shown below, is a recent reveal, marking his work on Marvel titles for the first time in over five years since he worked on Immortal Hulk: The Best Defense, Old Man Logan Annual, Venom Annual, and Champions.

In the initial release, renowned artists like Ryan Stegman (known for his work on X-Men and Superior Spider-Man Returns), Lee Bermejo (Daredevil and Winter Soldier), and the late Gil Kane will contribute unique cover versions. Notably, Gil Kane is famous for his work on 1971’s Amazing Spider-Man #101, where Morbius made his first appearance, and the classic “The Night Gwen Stacy Died” arc in issues 121 and 122 of Amazing Spider-Man from 1973.

In summary: “The storyline introduces Peter Parker struggling to find work, yet his job hunt is abruptly disrupted when a wild Rhino attacks. This incident, however, marks only the beginning of a larger problem. A significant Spider-Villain is orchestrating events from behind the scenes, arming other Spider-Villains, including one who hasn’t been seen for over seven years! As for Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin-less version, what activities has he been engaged in lately?

Intriguingly, I’m leaning towards the possibility that Mendel Stromm – once partnered with pre-Green Goblin Norman Osborn before his transformation into the robotic menace known as Robot Master – could be the mysterious Spider-Man villain lurking in the shadows. Remember him? He was last seen faking his death in 2018’s Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 5) #5, a full seven years ago. Stromm has a history of backing other nefarious characters, so it wouldn’t be entirely out of character for him to re-emerge as a powerful force against our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

Kelly explained to Polygon that while this is a new #1 issue, he doesn’t view it as a complete restart. Instead, he considers it the continuation of the story of one of the world’s most iconic characters, a privilege he doesn’t take lightly given the legacy left by those who came before him. After reflecting on what drew him to Spider-Man and his associates, the stories that resonated with him at various stages in life, and how to blend all of that with what has already been established, Kelly aims to create something fresh yet consistent with the past.

He went on to say that he’s intrigued by delving deeper into these characters’ inner lives and unexplored territories, such as Peter Parker’s high school days before he became ‘Puny Parker.’ At the same time, he feels compelled to take daring, unconventional risks to see how Spider-Man handles challenges of Marvel Universe magnitude. In his own words, “Pressure makes diamonds.
