As a seasoned comic book enthusiast who’s seen more Spider-Man stories than I can count on my fingers (and toes), let me tell you that the upcoming relaunch of Amazing Spider-Man is shaping up to be quite the spectacle. The combination of Joe Kelly, John Romita Jr., and Pepe Larraz is a dream team if ever there was one – a veritable trinity of talent!
In April, Marvel’s popular character Spider-Man starts a new journey in the comic books as Marvel announces a fresh start for its iconic title, Amazing Spider-Man. Renowned writer Joe Kelly, from the recent The 8 Deaths of Spider-Man storyline, teams up with seasoned artist John Romita Jr. and emerging talent Pepe Larraz, who has been praised for his work in Blood Hunt and X-Men. Despite this being another #1 issue for the series, Kelly emphasizes maintaining continuity rather than a complete makeover.
Kelly stated to Polygon that although this is a fresh start, she doesn’t view it as a complete restart. Instead, she sees herself as writing the next chapter of one of the world’s most iconic characters, fortunate to carry on from those who came before. After fully absorbing this, she spends a significant amount of time reflecting on what she admires about Spider-Man and his supporting cast, which stories touched her at various stages in life, and how she can incorporate all these elements into something that aligns with the past while still pushing boundaries… Her ambition is to take daring, unanticipated risks so as to observe how Spider-Man reacts to challenges of Marvel-like magnitude. She believes that pressure forges diamonds.
The storyline places Peter Parker back in his usual predicament: jobless and seeking employment. However, his job hunt is abruptly halted by a rampaging Rhino, who turns out to be just the beginning of a sinister plot. Marvel hints at the return of a significant Spider-Villain, one who has been absent for more than seven years, as they are secretly working to arm other Spider-Villains. Additionally, there will reportedly be developments regarding Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin, who is currently free from that influence.
Artist Larraz meticulously represents the universe of Spider-Man in an exceptional manner. As he explained, “The crucial aspect of Spider-Man I aimed to depict truthfully is Peter himself.” He further discussed his attention to detail such as creating a realistic New York based on numerous city images he took for reference, and emphasizing the fluidity of Spidey’s movement and speed more in line with animation than comics. However, he highlighted that what truly makes Spider-Man comics resonate is our connection to Peter and his world, so his primary goal was to draw a Peter who you instantly identify with and feel empathy towards.
Spider-Editor Nick Lowe expressed surprise at securing Kelly for an ongoing run.
I didn’t expect Joe would have time for a prolonged run in The Amazing Spider-Man, given his constant involvement in animation, TV, and films. He usually only briefly appears in comics,” Lowe explained. “However, we brought him on board for The 8 Deaths of Spider-Man. Seeing how well he was doing, when he asked if he could become the permanent writer, I felt like I had just struck gold! With Pepe Larraz’s exceptional and swift artistic skills added to the mix, we knew we were creating a potential classic. Then John Romita Jr. agreed to stay on… it was like fireworks going off! Now I think I should buy some lottery tickets!
The reintroduction surpasses Zeb Wells’ contentious stint and is followed by Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man, which depicts a married version of the character, reportedly outselling the primary title in sales. Yet, it seems the publisher remains dedicated to preserving the present situation as established by the “One More Day” narrative.
In comic book stores on April 9, 2025, the sensational debut of The Amazing Spider-Man unfolds, beautifully colored by Marte Gracia and featuring a captivating cover design by Larraz.
