As a gamer, I’d put it like this: In the world of Ultimate Invasion, I found myself in the shoes of a transformed Hulk, not just any Hulk, but the legendary and immortal one leading the Children of Eternal Light. Though I’m still Dr. Bruce Banner inside, the line between me and the monster is blurred. I’ve got a seat on the Maker’s Council, a group of supervillains secretly ruling the world from behind the curtains. They even framed young Tony Stark’s team, the Ultimates 2.0, as terrorists. It’s a power game I’m playing, but I’ve got to keep my cool and zen to maintain the illusion.
The main objective of these individuals is to dismantle the Council and ready the globe for whatever arises from the City accelerated by the Maker within the next 18 months. To achieve this, they intend to establish a resistance network called the Ultimates, as revealed by writer Deniz Camp in an interview with ComicBook before the re-launch of the series. Following issue #3 of Ultimates this month, there are only 15 months left until the Maker is set free from his prison in Latveria.
In November, the team known as The Ultimates – consisting of Iron Lad (Tony Stark), Doctor Doom (Reed Richards), Captain America (Steve Rogers), Thor the Thunder God, warrior goddess Sif, Giant-Man (Hank Pym), Wasp (Janet van Dyne), and the latest recruit, America Chavez – will unite to face off against the Hulk. This epic battle marks the end of Camp and Juan Frigeri’s initial story arc, where the heroes not only tackle the Hulk himself but also confront his army called The Immortal Weapons in Ultimates #6.
In contrast to their Earth-616 counterparts, who are chi-wielding warriors from the Seven Capital Cities of Heaven as seen in the The Immortal Iron Fist comics by Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction, the Ultimate Universe’s Immortal Weapons seem to be genetically modified versions of characters like Fat Cobra and Tiger’s Beautiful Daughter, with a gamma-mutation twist.
Issue #3 of Ultimates presented Lejori Joena Zakaria, also known as the Ultimate She-Hulk. She was one of the 459 individuals who were affected by the 80 million tonnes of radioactive fallout from the Banner-Ulam Gamma Bomb explosion at the Pacific Coasting Grounds, a place renowned for being the Hulk’s birthplace. This contamination made Lejori’s island the most gamma-intensive spot on Earth. As a result, both human inhabitants, plants, and animals underwent mutation, earning the island its military-given name, Monster Island.
It appears that Hulk’s temple could be the location of a confrontation between The Ultimates and The Immortal Weapons, as depicted on artist Leinil Francis Yu’s (from Wolverine) encircling variant cover for issue #6 of Ultimates.
