As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that the return of Marvel vs. Capcom is a dream come true. The 90s were a golden age for fighting games, and the original Marvel vs. Capcom titles were some of the best.
Following a lengthy break, Marvel vs. Capcom is making its comeback with the release of Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics. This new compilation includes six various Marvel fighting games, many from the ’90s up to contemporary hardware platforms, marking Capcom’s initial project on the series since Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. Of course, the resurgence of MvC raises several questions about its revival and potential implications for the future.
Gladly, I just grabbed myself a copy of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection for PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and PC! Recently, I had a chat with game producer, Shuhei Matsumoto, about his experience collaborating with Marvel again and their strategy in resurrecting these classic games. During our discussion, I asked him questions about the possibility of a new MvC installment and what fans can do to help bring it into existence.
Has working with Marvel once more been an enjoyable experience for you? Was there a strong desire from their end to ensure these games are playable not only on modern platforms?
Shuhei Matsumoto: It made us extremely excited when we found out that we could introduce these games on modern systems. Similarly, Marvel shares this enthusiasm in our discussions.
CB: Have there been significant modifications in these games compared to their initial releases?
Assistant: We’ve fixed a few small issues and changed some of the earlier visuals, but for the most part, we’ve stuck close to the original game designs.
User: It seems many fans believed that numerous games from the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection might not return due to various reasons. Could you tell us about any particular challenges faced in porting these games to contemporary platforms?
AL: Our obstacles change depending on when they arise, yet I’m convinced that keeping our vision and determination helped us achieve this success. A Japanese proverb, “Endurance is strength,” truly speaks to me in a personal way.
As a gamer, I couldn’t help but wonder why The Punisher was added to this gaming pack. It’s definitely the most thrilling surprise that came with this bundle!
SM: Similar to adding Red Earth in the previous Capcom Fighting Collection, our renowned developers Kobuta and Muumuu approached me saying, “Matz! We might be able to add The Punisher if you’re interested!” And that’s how we decided to incorporate this game.
CB: Did Capcom find it challenging to locate some of the original artwork, marquee cards, and additional features for this compilation, given that some materials might be very old and potentially misplaced or destroyed over time?
At Capcom Headquarters in Japan, there’s a warehouse that houses some of our valuable artifacts. A renowned figure named Shoei oversees this collection, and fortunately, his team was able to unearth these treasures for us.
CB: How important was it to make sure that rollback netcode was included with all games?
The attitude of backing rollback netcode is significant, especially in the context of fighting games developed by Capcom.
Is it likely that Capcom will carry on with remastering and releasing their classic fighting games on newer platforms for us to enjoy in the upcoming years?
Interviewee: We’ve shared this aspiration in previous discussions: our aim is to transfer Capcom’s classic fighting games onto modern consoles. At the moment, we’re working hard to make it happen. It won’t be easy, but as they say, “persistence is key.
Is there any plan from Capcom to innovate or introduce something fresh for the Marvel vs. Capcom series? If they do, could the sales success of this compilation influence the series’ future?
SM: Isn’t it tempting to bring out another chapter in the series? [chuckles] My team and I certainly have the ambition to do so. Although commercial success could play a role, I believe it’s temporary. What truly matters are the fans who keep encouraging us and expressing their love for the series. This is significant because this project isn’t something Capcom can accomplish alone.
