Marvel Zombies Gets a Release Date (And a Hilarious New Synopsis)

As a seasoned gamer with a hearty appetite for all things Marvel and horror, I can hardly contain my excitement for the long-awaited arrival of “Marvel Zombies” on Disney+! With an impressive ensemble cast reprising their roles from the MCU and a darker tone that promises to deliver both superhero spectacle and zombie survival horror, this series is shaping up to be a unique and terrifying experience.

After a long period of progressing slowly, the zombie superhero series from Marvel, titled Marvel Zombies, now has a definite release date. Marvel is not being too formal about this show’s description. The much-awaited TV-MA animated series is set to premiere on Disney+ on October 3, 2025, making it perfect for the Halloween season, as revealed in Marvel’s 2025 Preview Kit sent to media outlets.

The official summary? “It’s ‘Marvel Zombies’!” This description has a playful tone that seems to acknowledge the show’s obvious premise, offering fans an intriguing teaser. A new image for the series was also revealed, which you can view below.

Marvel Zombies Gets a Release Date (And a Hilarious New Synopsis)

The four-part animated series initially revealed during Disney+ Day in November 2021 has been somewhat quiet, missing appearances at various Marvel Studios conventions. However, despite this, the project led by creators Zeb Wells and Bryan Andrews has resurfaced, ensuring its place within Marvel’s streaming schedule for 2025.

A star-studded cast of Marvel Cinematic Universe veterans will provide voiceovers for the series. Notable actors like Awkwafina, David Harbour, Simu Liu, Elizabeth Olsen, Randall Park, Florence Pugh, Hailee Steinfeld, Dominique Thorne, and Iman Vellani will reprise their live-action roles. Additionally, Todd Williams is set to join the cast as Blade, the vampire slayer.

This series can be seen as a spiritual sequel to the well-liked “What If…Zombies?!” episode from the first season of What If…, which set up the idea of a zombie-filled MCU. Last year, Vellani shared with The Direct that her character Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel) will be the main focus in this story, portraying her as the “Frodo” of this apocalyptic narrative.

The story continues after the finale of the “What If…?” episode, where remnants found a zombified Thanos holding the Infinity Gauntlet in Wakanda. This series takes cues from the initial Marvel Zombies comics, a five-part limited series that ran from 2005 to 2006. The creators of this comic book series were Robert Kirkman, renowned for “The Walking Dead,” and Sean Phillips, with Arthur Suydam providing the cover art.

At Disney’s D23 event, it was reportedly shown that the series presented a more ominous atmosphere, with Shang-Chi, Katy, and Wenwu battling against infected heroes in an attempt to flee. A segment of the footage emphasized Wenwu’s selfless act, where he employed his ten rings to shield his son, demonstrating the series’ skillful blend of terror and superhero combat scenes.

In this new scenario, legendary figures such as Captain America, Hawkeye, Abomination, and Scarlet Witch have undergone transformations and become infected. On the other hand, characters like Yelena Belova, Red Guardian, Death Dealer, and Jimmy Woo find themselves in a chilling alternate universe. Here, a Quantum Realm virus has altered Earth, causing our planet’s strongest heroes to rise as the undead.

Marvel Zombies, with its horror theme and mature content, marks the studio’s initial exploration into the horror genre. This unique production combines the thrill of superhero action with the chilling terror of zombie survival horror. The limited number of episodes implies a focused, intense storyline that won’t shy away from portraying the gritty aspects of this darker sector of the Marvel universe.
