As a devoted Marvel fan, I can confidently say that the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe appears to be centered around ensemble team movies. Following the success of Deadpool and Wolverine post-Endgame, the positive reception towards Thunderbolts, the upcoming Fantastic Four: First Steps, and the ongoing production of two new Avengers films, it’s hard not to notice this trend. Furthermore, according to trusted Marvel insider Daniel Richtman (known as Daniel RPK), another title seems poised to enter the fray. With a mission to prevent a cosmic conflict and an intimidating name like The Annihilators, these characters are undeniably formidable, although their presence might seem somewhat familiar if you’ve been closely following the minute details of the MCU.
The Expendables“. Just like how the action movie features an array of renowned action stars, “The Annihilators” is essentially a superstar ensemble of Marvel’s most powerful space-faring characters. This team includes Quasar, a cosmic hero similar to Captain Marvel and Adam Warlock; Ronan the Accuser, known from “GOTG” lore; Gladiator, whose strength escalates with his mental devotion; Beta Ray Bill, a character akin to Thor who can wield Mjölnir; and Silver Surfer, Galactus’ personal herald. If this isn’t an elite team, it’s hard to imagine what would be. However, it remains to be seen whether these characters will appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s adaptation of “The Annihilators“, so let’s discuss that possibility.
The Strongest Marvel Characters
Let’s dive right into it – let’s discuss the clues that previous Marvel films have dropped about this elite alliance of gods. Despite the mixed response to 2023’s “The Marvels”, it’s worth noting that Captain Marvel was referred to as an ‘Annihilator’ by a Kree soldier in the movie. Although she didn’t appreciate the label, could this hint at her eventually becoming part of the team? Given her impressive capabilities (remember, she single-handedly wrecked Thanos’ spaceship in “Endgame”), it seems plausible, but only time will tell if she does indeed join the group.
In the movie Thor: Ragnarok, there was a hint about The Annihilators, as one of the large statues on the Grandmaster’s Tower was revealed to be Beta Ray Bill, a member of The Annihilators in the comic books. Whether this implies anything is uncertain, since Man-Thing is also shown, and he already has a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, while Ares, Bi-Beast, and Dark-Crawler have yet to make their appearances on screen.
Let’s get back to discussing the main characters. Cosmo the Space Dog is clearly part of Rocket and Groot’s new team, so she’ll be there. She was instrumental in Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3, aiding kids in reaching Knowhere, a significant location also featured in The Thanos Imperative. As we delve into Guardians of the Galaxy, let’s discuss Ronan the Accuser’s potential role in the Annihilators movie adaptation. Remember, Peter Quill defeated him in the first film, but it’s important to recall that this character has a history of being killed and resurrected multiple times in the comics.
Some Characters on the Annihilators Team Are Already Here
Although the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t officially introduced Quasar yet, the upcoming film “Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3” features a younger version of the character as Phyla-Vell, played by Kai Zen. In the comic book series “Annihilation: Conquest,” which took place in 2007, Phyla assumes the role of the cosmic hero when a cybernetic species attempts to conquer the universe with assistance from Ultron. Furthermore, it’s worth noting that the MCU has already shown Kamala’s bangle in “The Marvels” to be the Quantum Band, which is the source of Quasar’s power. Given this connection, it seems highly probable that Phyla will eventually take on the role of Quasar if the movie does get made.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but speculate about who will be the main adversary for The Annihilator team. Fingers crossed that Ultron might make an appearance to stir things up. From what I’ve gathered, there are three strong contenders: Silver Surfer, Gladiator, and Ikon. Excitingly, the upcoming Fantastic Four series, First Steps, is rumored to introduce a female version of the Silver Surfer from another universe.
Now, here’s where things get intriguing. Will actress Julia Garner’s portrayal of Shalla-Bal be the same one that could potentially join The Annihilators? Time will tell, but I’m hoping for some gender balance in this team, just as we see in other Marvel Cinematic Universe groups. Stay tuned!
A Few Changes to the Annihilators Would Do Good
It’s been speculated that Norrin Radd, his Earth 616 counterpart, might make an appearance at some point, adding an exciting new element. After the events of “First Steps”, we might see a team reshuffle. Gladiator and Ikon are unpredictable factors in this scenario. Ikon is a female spaceknight from Galador, while Ikon could be a wild card too. To add diversity to the character dynamics, there should be a humanoid robot on the team, similar to Rom the Space Knight. This would resemble the dynamic of characters like Groot or Rocket in Guardians of the Galaxy.
Regarding Gladiator, it would be more intriguing to introduce Skaar (the Hulk’s son) instead. We last saw him in She-Hulk, and his mother being a Sakaarian native adds a space theme that aligns well with the movie. The Avengers lineage gives this character some gravitas. A new team capable of demolishing countless adversaries would bring a refreshing twist to the MCU. Here’s hoping we get official news about the rumored Annihilators movie soon. In the meantime, mark your calendars for The Fantastic Four: First Steps, hitting theaters on July 25.
