Marvel’s Blade: Shocking Timeline Twist!

Wakanda Forever” showed events dating back thousands to millions of years such as battles between Asgardians and Frost Giants on Jotunheim, a vibranium meteorite hitting Africa, and the birth of the mutant Namor, first among the people of Talokan.

These movies, such as “Captain America: The First Avenger” and “Agent Carter“, are set in the 1940s, while “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” transports us to a futuristic 1960s. “Captain Marvel ” is situated in the time of Blockbuster Video stores in the 1990s. However, the new version of “Blade“, starring Mahershala Ali, would have taken us even deeper into the past: to the 1920s.

In an interview with the John Campea Show, two-time Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter shared that she was preparing a 1920s version of Blade for Marvel Studios. However, writers and actors strikes in 2023 halted production on the project, leaving Carter feeling uncertain and stuck (in limbo).

It was during this time when Ryan Coogler, the director of Black Panther, approached her. He had been preparing his own work titled Sinners, a supernatural drama set in 1930s Mississippi for Warner Bros. The plot revolves around a juke joint run by twin brothers (portrayed by Michael B. Jordan) who find themselves under attack by vampires seeking to transform their customers.

Carter shared, “I’ve delved deeply into research for a period vampire tale – the story goes by ‘Blade’. Ryan’s wife, Zinzi, who is a producer on [Sinners], phoned and said, ‘Ryan has a narrative about… It is a historical account of vampires.’ I recalled that I had been immersed in this domain for quite some time preparing Blade, which wasn’t going to materialize, so I decided to listen.

She went on to express her surprise, stating, “I wouldn’t have thought he was making a period film, let alone a vampire movie.” If asked about his next project following “Black Panther [Wakanda Forever]“, I’m not sure I would have predicted that genre.

Previously, news circulated that the revamped “Blade” film was planned to take place in the 1920s, with events unfolding across various timeframes. Notably, in the comic books, Eric Brooks – a character who is half-human and half-vampire – was born during London’s Great Depression in 1929. Furthermore, it was disclosed that the production under director Yann Demange was progressing with Mia Goth (known for her role in “Pearl”) playing Lilith, an ancient demon-vampire deity who desired the blood of Blade’s daughter.

The latest adaptation of ‘Blade’, initially slated for release but subsequently absent from Disney’s schedule since October, is rumored to be set within the current Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline. Mahershala Ali, confirmed as Blade at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, has thus far appeared only in an uncredited, post-credits scene in ‘Eternals’.
