Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World Tracking to Open Within Range of The Winter Soldier at the Box Office

The upcoming Marvel Studios film “Captain America: Brave New World,” starring Anthony Mackie, is poised for a successful launch at the box office. According to pre-release tracking data from The Quorum, it’s anticipated to debut with around $95 million when it premieres on February 14 (as reported by Deadline). This estimate suggests the opening weekend earnings could range between $86 million and $95 million, potentially surpassing $100 million for the extended President’s Day weekend, which runs from Friday, February 14 to Monday, February 17. Tickets are expected to go on sale this coming Friday, January 17.

If Captain America 4 debuts within the $95 million range, it would match the box office success of Captain America: The Winter Soldier from 2014, an espionage thriller that featured Anthony Mackie as Falcon, Chris Evans as Captain America opposite Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier, Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, and Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury. This movie made $95 million in ticket sales when it first hit theaters during Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 2 back in April 2014 from approximately 4,000 screens.

The projected figure is nearly equivalent to the $96.8 million earned by the R-rated Marvel movie Deadpool & Wolverine during its second weekend last summer, and it falls within the range of the earnings made by Guardians of the Galaxy ($94.3 million) in 2014, Justice League ($93.8 million) in 2017, and Spider-Man: Far From Home ($92.5 million) in 2019. To put it into perspective with previous Captain America films, the initial installment, Captain America: The First Avenger, debuted with $65 million in 2011, while Captain America: Civil War, released in 2016, had a franchise record-breaking opening of $179 million in May that year. This film, you may recall, featured Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and marked the debuts of Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Following Steve Rogers’ retirement and passing on the shield and mantle to Anthony Mackie in the 2019 film “Avengers: Endgame“, and then taking up his new role in the 2021 Disney+ series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier“, Mackie’s debut as Captain America is on track to achieve one of the top five highest opening weekends for February releases.

Since its release in 2018, “Black Panther” has held the distinction of having the highest opening weekend and second weekend earnings for any film released in February, with grosses of $202 million and $111 million respectively. This places it as both the number one and third highest-grossing films for the month domestically. The runner-up position is held by “Deadpool” from 2016, which earned $132 million during its opening weekend. “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” released in 2023, comes in fourth with earnings of $106 million. Rounding out the top five is “Fifty Shades of Grey” from 2015, the only non-comic book movie in the list of highest February openings domestically, with earnings of $85.1 million.

The movie’s advertising collaborations encompass McDonald’s and Tide Detergent, with Kendrick Lamar’s “N95” being showcased in its trailers. In a similar vein, Marvel Comics has introduced the comic book series “Sam Wilson: Captain America” where the star-studded superhero takes on the Red Hulk character (not Thaddeus Ross), who will be featured in the upcoming “Red Hulk” series starting from Feb 26.

Also joining the Marvel Black History Month variant cover series, which includes T’Challa, Frenzy from X-Factor, Gold Tiger of Wakanda’s New Champions, Miles Morales, and the X-Men’s Temper and Storm, is Sam Wilson as Captain America. Additionally, an all-new anthology novel titled “Captain America: The Shield of Sam Wilson” will be released on January 14th. Furthermore, a picture book entitled “A Hero Looks Like You” will be available, taking place in the universe of the movie.

According to the plot summary, “Upon meeting the newly inaugurated U.S. President Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford), Sam becomes embroiled in a global crisis. He must unravel the mystery behind a malicious worldwide scheme before the hidden culprit triggers a catastrophe that turns the world crimson.” Directed by Julius Onah, known for The Cloverfield Paradox, this Kevin Feige-produced film also features Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Xosha Roquemore, Carl Lumbly, with Giancarlo Esposito, Liv Tyler, and Tim Blake Nelson in leading roles. Captain America: Brave New World will be released exclusively in cinemas on Valentine’s Day, February 14th.
