In the Marvel comic series, Daredevil, written by Saladin Ahmed with art contributions from Aaron Kuder, Farid Karami, German Peralta, Juann Cabal, Christopher Campana, and Luigi Zagaria, there have been almost as many villains as artists. Since its reintroduction in 2023, the storyline of Daredevil has seen Matt Murdock, the regenerated man, face off against adversaries such as Bullseye, Kingpin, a corrupt police gang known as The Heat, and the Seven Deadly Sins. These sinister entities have taken over characters ranging from She-Hulk and Wolverine to Ben Urich and Foggy Nelson.
In Hell’s Kitchen, a fresh antagonist has emerged, resembling a type of fungus that might pass as one of the Cordyceps-infected Clickers from The Last of Us. Contrasting with the widespread fungal disaster portrayed in the HBO series and its source video game, this growth appears to be confined to Hell’s Kitchen… at least for the time being.
The “Introductory Rites” storyline concluded with Sin Wrath presenting Daredevil with an agonizing decision: either save Foggy, his dearest friend, or Bullseyee, his most hated adversary. In a desperate attempt, Daredevil strove to rescue them both, but in the end, Bullseye missed grasping a lifeline from Daredevil’s billy club, resulting in his fatal fall.
In April’s issue #20 of Daredevil, the storyline titled “Rites of Reconciliation” began, reintroducing two popular characters from the ’90s: Daredevil’s black armor outfit and his ex-girlfriend Nyla Skin.
In my role as an astute movie critic, I found myself engrossed in the latest Daredevil adventure, where our hero, clad in his signature black suit, delved into the enigmatic disappearances surrounding the newly-erected Propertunity Tower. As he probed deeper into this mystery, a peculiar fungus infected him, causing me to hold my breath as he collapsed under a barrage of exploding spores. The scene then shifted dramatically, with two men in hazmat suits swooping in and spiriting both Daredevil and the missing individuals away. The episode concluded with a chilling cliffhanger: Matt Murdock and the vanished victims, now adorned with strange mushroom-like growths, trapped within the very walls of Propertunity Tower.
As a diehard cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but share my excitement over the upcoming issues of Daredevil, which promise to introduce a fresh and intriguing antagonist, a fungus-based supervillain! This fascinating character graces the cover of issue #22, masterfully crafted by none other than John Romita Jr., renowned for his work on Amazing Spider-Man. The following issue, number #23, will also feature a variant cover by Rickie Yagawa, known for his exceptional work on Marvel’s Voices Infinity Comic. I simply can’t wait to see these talented artists bring this new villain to life!
