Marvel’s Fantastic Four Ending Undergoes Major Reshoots After Test Screening Flop

Marvel Studios is reportedly in panic mode over the Fantastic Four: First Steps ending.

Based on a post by user Will-Iam Smith on X, it appears that the movie’s conclusion met with disapproval from viewers during initial preview performances.

The initial audience reactions to test screenings weren’t positive due to a disconnect with the ending, prompting some reshoots of certain scenes. Despite my optimism, it’s hard not to feel a bit concerned – Marvel is counting on this film to be a grand slam. #FantasticFour

The test screenings didn’t resonate as expected due to the audience not liking the finale, so they’re re-filming certain sequences now. I remain optimistic, but it does raise some concerns — Marvel desperately wants this Fantastic Four film to be a grand slam. #FantasticFour

It’s true, and we have it on good authority: Contrary to what some might have thought as mere conjecture, Marvel is indeed re-filming crucial parts of the Fantastic Four movie due to unsatisfactory responses from test viewers. The original ending is being altered as a result.

As we approach July 25th, the date set for our theatrical release, it seems like our studio is running out of time, and there’s a mountain of Visual Effects (VFX) tasks yet to be completed.

Not Just Pickups — This Is a Rewrite

As a follower, I find myself questioning when reshoots happen so close to release, but when those reshoots are centered on the final act, it indicates a more significant issue than just a small adjustment. It seems to imply that the film’s ending wasn’t resonating as intended, and Marvel is under pressure to rework the climax.

Actress Julia Garner is portraying Shalla-Bal on the filming location of ‘THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS’ for extra shooting sessions in Los Angeles.

On the Los Angeles set, it’s been reported that Julia Garner, playing Shalla-Bal (a female interpretation of Silver Surfer), was filming a beach scene without any visual effects indicators. She looked completely human, dressed in a white gown adorned with cosmic patterns, hinting at a significant reinterpretation of her character. This has sparked widespread speculation that the narrative arc for Shalla-Bal may have been altered, potentially leading to a different resolution for her storyline.

Marvel’s Multiverse Misfires

On previous occasions, significant Marvel productions have attempted to make changes in the final moments before release, similar to what happened with Captain America: Brave New World. After receiving negative feedback during early screenings, it underwent last-minute adjustments, but unfortunately ended up with a confusing plotline and subpar visuals. This ultimately led to one of Marvel’s least successful films at the box office.

And now it looks like Fantastic Four: First Steps is following in those same footsteps.

The upcoming Marvel film is said to delve into the roots of its first team, set in a 1960s-inspired blend of nostalgia and advanced technology, dubbed as a ‘retro-futuristic’ alternate reality. The characters Reed Richards (played by Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn), and Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) are introduced in this tale, battling to safeguard their world from the cosmic threat of Galactus. However, it seems the climax or resolution of that battle, as seen by test audiences, did not meet expectations.

All Eyes on the Fantastic Four Ending

It seems that Marvel had high hopes for Fantastic Four to revitalize the MCU, but it appears they might be on the wrong track. A shaky script, hasty rewrites, hastily finished CGI, and unexplained multiverse complications seem more likely to tire out viewers than draw them back in.

The conclusion of “Fantastic Four” could significantly impact the future of all Marvel productions. With “Avengers: Doomsday” currently under production and fans eagerly anticipating, this movie was intended to establish a mood. However, it’s turning out to be another instance where Marvel seems to be constructing the aircraft during flight.
