Marvel's Ghost Rider '44 Stars in New Series With Wolverine

As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the vibrant worlds of comics and superheroes, I can hardly contain my excitement for Marvel Comics’ upcoming limited series, “Hellhunters.” Set against the backdrop of World War II, this gritty adventure brings together some of the most iconic characters from the Marvel Universe. The prospect of delving into the forgotten history of Ghost Rider ’44, U.S. Sergeant Sal Romero, alongside familiar faces like Nick Fury, Bucky Barnes, Peggy Carter, Soldier Supreme, and even a WWII-era Logan, is nothing short of exhilarating.

In the Marvel Universe, the Greatest Generation refers to the most outstanding superheroes who served during World War II. This group includes Captain America (the star-studded super soldier), his partner Bucky Barnes, Namor the Sub-Mariner, Sergeant Nick Fury and his Howling Commandos, the original Human Torch and Toro, Union Jack, Miss America, and the Whizzer. Teams like the Invaders and the Liberty Legion are legendary in history. Marvel Comics is now revealing the covert past of a team that battled on the frontlines – The Hellhunters.

Stepping out from the thrilling saga penned by Philip Kennedy Johnson in The Incredible Hulk comics, I’m diving into a five-issue limited series set to drop on December 15th. Teamed up with Adam Gorham, the artist behind Immortal Hulk, we’re unveiling the backstory of the Spirit of Vengeance who wreaked havoc on World War II battlefields before Johnny Blaze – none other than U.S. Sergeant Sal Romero, the Ghost Rider from ’44!

In the second-to-last year of World War II, the novel Hellhunters introduces a character known as Hell’s Angel, who teams up with Nick Fury, Bucky, Peggy Carter, a different version of Stephen Rogers (also known as Soldier Supreme from another universe), and Logan. This group fought Hydra alongside Captain America, Bucky, and Sgt. Fury during their time as soldiers and spies. The book Hellhunters is referred to as “the untold tale of the most fearsome, brutal, terrifying, and badass squad of Nazi hunters from WWII.

During a parachute jump into Nazi-controlled Europe, U.S. Sergeant Sal Romero transforms into Ghost Rider ’44, a supernatural avenger. While encountering young Nazi officer Felix Bruckner, an unimaginable evil possesses Bruckner. In the wake of their brutal clash, Romero undergoes a rebirth as the Ghost Rider. His mission is twofold: to exact vengeance on Bruckner and the Nazis, and to protect humanity from impending destruction.

The author of Marvel’s Alien declared that Ghost Rider ’44 is undeniably the best guest star in our Incredible Hulk series up to this point. I had a complete backstory for Sergeant Sal Romero conceptualized before my partner Nic Klein breathed life into him through his art, and the character turned out to be incredibly cool and entertaining. As a result, we were certain that the ‘War Devil’ storyline wouldn’t be his only appearance.

Gorham mentioned that “Hellhunters” is turning out to be a fantastic read for him. Philip Kennedy Johnson’s scripts combine elements of horror, superhero stories, and classic pulp fiction into an intense, gritty journey. I am putting in extra effort on this project to create action scenes that are both visceral and gruesome, aiming to leave readers speechless and eagerly anticipating more.

In the “Spirits of Vengeance” storyline of 2023’s Incredible Hulk #6, Ghost Rider ’44 emerged following Bruce Banner’s encounter with a migrant community in Texas who owned an old Harley. A child named Leo mentioned that his “Uncle Sal” would ride the motorcycle whenever there were threats, describing him as being like an angel but also having a harsh temperament.

At first, Leo’s protective spirit launched an attack on The Hulk, mistaking him for a dangerous creature threatening Leo. However, it was revealed that this menace was actually Jinni Dagaal, the First Hunter of Men, not the Hulk. Before Sal’s spectral presence departed from his Hell Cycle, both The Hulk and Ghost Rider ’44 managed to subdue the monster. Now, Sal’s spirit waits to be called back to the world of the living whenever more monsters appear.

Hellhunters #1 is on sale December 15th from Marvel Comics.
