The fact that Riri Williams’ hometown of Chicago will play a significant role is particularly intriguing to me, having spent my formative years in the Windy City myself.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to expand with the arrival of “Ironheart”, an upcoming Disney+ exclusive series centered around Riri Williams, or Ironheart, played by Dominique Thorne from “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”. Expected to premiere on Disney+ in the following year, this series recently unveiled a sneak peek at the 2024 D23 Expo. The footage revealed glimpses of Riri’s superheroine and young adult life in her hometown, Chicago, Illinois. In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Thorne and Anthony Ramos, who plays Parker Robbins / The Hood, hinted at the crucial role that Chicago plays in the storyline of “Ironheart”.
“I’m embarking on a journey to delve deeper into my past, my roots, and the city that shaped me – Chicago,” I shared. “The narrative unfolds as I grapple with the realization of the immense knowledge I possess, a treasure trove of genius within me. A struggle ensues as I weigh my options on how best to utilize this newfound awareness. The story unfolds in my hometown, showcasing the various paths I could choose. It’s a question of who and how I’ll use these insights about myself that I’ve uncovered along the way.”
“In the comics, Parker Robbins hails from New York, but we decided to change his origin and set him in Humboldt Park, Chicago instead,” Ramos explained. “This neighborhood has a significant Puerto Rican community, which influenced our narrative for Parker’s upbringing. We crafted a backstory where his mother was part of the Young Lords movement. The city of Chicago is deeply ingrained in all our characters and this series as a whole, so I can’t wait for viewers to see that aspect. It was truly fortunate to be able to film there. Chicago is an incredible city, one of the finest cities globally.”
What Is Ironheart About?
The movie “Ironheart” presents Thorne as Riri Williams, a brilliant inventor who designs the most cutting-edge armor since Iron Man’s suit. Additionally, Lyric Ross, Shea Coule?, Zoe Terakes, Alden Ehrenreich, Manny Montana, Shakira Barrera, and Harper Anthony are part of the cast in yet-to-be-disclosed roles.
The “Ironheart” Disney+ series was officially announced during the Disney Investor Day presentation in 2020. “Snowpiercer” writer, playwright, poet, and educator Chinaka Hodge is set to be the show’s lead writer. Sam Bailey and Angela Barnes will take on directing duties, with Ryan Coogler’s Proximity involved in production. Alongside Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum, and Zoie Nagelhout, Coogler, Hodge, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian serve as executive producers for the series.
