Marvel's James Gunn Pays Tribute to Chadwick Boseman With Rocket Raccoon Throwback Photo

As a fan who had the privilege of witnessing Chadwick Boseman‘s electrifying portrayal of T’Challa/Black Panther, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of loss on this fourth anniversary of his passing. The world may have lost an exceptional talent, but his spirit continues to resonate within the Marvel Universe and beyond.

On August 28, 2020, the world received tragic news: Chadwick Boseman, renowned for his role in Black Panther, had passed away after a secret fight against colon cancer at age 43. The loss was deeply felt not just by fans, but also by friends, coworkers, and those close to him. Today, four years later, Boseman is being honored by his Marvel associates. On Instagram, James Gunn, director of Guardians of the Galaxy and co-CEO of DC Studios, posted a touching tribute to Boseman.

In a recent social media post, Gunn published two images. The initial snapshot showcases Boseman in Black Panther’s costume alongside a Rocket Raccoon prop on set, while the second image displays Gunn, Boseman, and Chris Pratt from Guardians of the Galaxy. Gunn paid his tribute to Boseman by writing “Rest in Peace” accompanied with a heart emoji.

On the fourth anniversary of his passing, I’m not alone among Chadwick Boseman’s Marvel comrades who honor him in our own ways. My costar from the Black Panther films, Lupita Nyong’o, expressed her tribute on Instagram too. She wrote a heartfelt message that resonated with me: “Grief never ends. But it changes. It’s a journey, not a destination to remain in. Grief is not a sign of weakness, nor a lack of faith. It’s the price of love.” -anonymous Remembering Chadwick Boseman. Forever. Her post also featured a poignant black-and-white image of him as well as one capturing happier moments we shared together.

What’s The Future of Black Panther in the MCU?

After Chadwick Boseman’s unfortunate demise, the 2022 movie “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” paid tribute to him by having his character, T’Challa, perish within the film. The movie was often referred to as a heartfelt dedication to Boseman. Furthermore, it paved the way for a new hero to assume the Black Panther role, with Shuri (played by Letitia Wright) being a strong candidate for the mantle. It’s worth noting that plans for a third “Black Panther” film have not been confirmed yet, but there are rumors suggesting it might happen based on Letitia Wright’s previous statements.

2023 saw Wright expressing enthusiasm about the remarkable two-year journey where everyone united to promote their project. However, he admitted that a brief pause is necessary for rejuvenation and strategic planning, with director Ryan [Coogler] returning to work in due time. The anticipation remains high as we look forward to unveiling the next phase.
