Marvel’s Jonathan Hickman Returns to X-Men’s Krakoa in Surprising Way

Marvel's Jonathan Hickman Returns to X-Men's Krakoa in Surprising Way

As a long-time fan of Marvel’s X-Men, I must say that Jonathan Hickman has left an indelible mark on the mutant universe. His work during the Krakoan Age was nothing short of revolutionary, and his departure from the line was a bittersweet moment for many fans. But fear not, dear readers, for Hickman is back with a vengeance in the crossover event “Aliens vs. Avengers”!

Over a lengthy period, Jonathan Hickman has significantly impacted the storyline of Marvel’s X-Men. Starting from 2019 up until earlier this year, he was instrumental in launching the Krakoan Age, a major overhaul of the mutant status quo by Marvel Comics. Although Hickman parted ways with the series in 2022, allowing other creators to guide the narrative towards its conclusion, he has just revisited the concept in an unforeseen manner.

Title hinting at the content, “Aliens vs. Avengers” #1, tells a tale of conflict between the Marvel Universe’s valiant heroes and the terrifying extraterrestrials from the Alien series. Instead of leaping forward in time to follow an eclectic group of aging heroes attempting to save Earth, this issue illustrates the collapse of numerous regions on Earth as depicted by Marvel’s map. Notably, the island of Krakoa serves as a backdrop, where, according to Hickman’s narrative, most X-Men have utilized portals to escape to their Martian colony. In stark contrast, Apocalypse elects to remain behind and battle the encroaching Xenomorphs.

Why Did Jonathan Hickman Leave X-Men?

When Hickman revealed his decision to leave not only the primary X-Men series but also his role in managing the wider Krakoa project, he mentioned shifting creative objectives as one of the factors behind his departure.

Initially, Hickman had a grand vision for the X-Men story he wanted to tell, divided into three major acts. The first part of this plan was House of X, but as things turned out, the entire scheme underwent significant changes. He explained this to Entertainment Weekly, mentioning that the initial plan, although it could be stretched over three years, was not definitive due to numerous intriguing ideas he had planted that other creators might want to explore. This lack of specificity and the desire for collaboration with other writers led to an open-ended approach, and Hickman made it clear to Marvel from the start that he couldn’t predict how long the first part would last.

What Is Aliens vs. Avengers About?

In the first issue of “Aliens vs. Avengers“, the events culminate with Xenomorphs invading Earth. The ultimate organism faces a planet filled with superhumans. Who will succumb first in this exhilarating four-part series by collaborators Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic? This unmissable epic is sure to thrill fans of both Marvel and the Alien universe!

“Throughout my tenure at Marvel, I’ve exclusively worked on licensed or superhero properties. When this unique opportunity presented itself about two years ago, I couldn’t resist. As a huge fan of the ‘Aliens’ universe and its rich mythology, I found it challenging yet exciting to blend these elements with Marvel’s style,” Hickman explained to Entertainment Weekly upon announcing the project. “Esad and I have managed to create a fusion that caters to fans of both franchises.”
