As a longtime fan of Marvel Comics and Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I am beyond excited about the official start of the MCU’s “mutant era” with the arrival of Deadpool & Wolverine. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige‘s journey in the Marvel universe began over two decades ago when he served as an associate producer on the first X-Men film under Fox. Fast forward to today, and Feige is now at the helm of introducing mutants into the MCU after Disney acquired 20th Century Fox and the X-Men film rights.
The Marvel Cinotic Universe is now welcoming mutants into its storyline. Back in 2019 at San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige shared his intentions for introducing mutants to the MCU. Since Disney took over 20th Century Fox and the X-Men film rights in 2017, Feige has been working on projects like “Black Widow,” “Ms. Marvel,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” and “The Marvels.” These productions have gradually brought mutant characters into the MCU.
Following a quiet introduction of mutants, such as Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) with her X-gene and Namor (Tenoch Huerta Mejía), Marvel Studios is officially bringing the X-Men into the live-action scene in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” Previous appearances by Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and Beast (Kelsey Grammer) from the Fox “X-Men” films add to the multiverse crossover.
“This is only the start,” Feige expressed on Marvel Live during the red carpet premiere of Deadpool & Wolverine. “As I’ve mentioned before, mutants are en route, and this film marks the initiation. I’m eagerly anticipating viewers’ reactions as they discover what a treat Deadpool & Wolverine holds in store and realize that it signals the long-awaited introduction of mutants into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
The “mutant era” in the MCU, as referred to by Feige, marks a complete coming-circle for Marvel Studios president Feige. Feige produces “Deadpool & Wolverine” alongside his previous boss and longtime X-Men franchise producer, Lauren Shuler Donner.
“About a quarter of a century ago, I was involved with the X-Men films,” Feige shared. “It’s amazing to reflect on that. At the time, I believed my film career in relation to X-Men had ended. The initial X-Men productions hold significant value for me as they set me on this path. However, when Marvel Studios was established, we didn’t possess the rights. I assumed I would only be a fan watching from the sidelines. And now, attending the premiere alongside Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), it’s an incredible feeling.”
Prior to initiating the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with Marvel Studios’ own production of “Iron Man” in 2008, Kevin Feige had previously served various roles in Fox-produced Marvel films such as co-producer for “X2” (2003) and “Elektra” (2005), and executive producer for “Fantastic Four” (2005) and “X-Men: The Last Stand” (2006). Feige also produces Marvel Animation’s “X-Men ’97.” Currently, he is working on the live-action reboots of “X-Men” and “The Fantastic Four,” set to be part of MCU Phase 6.
