Marvel's Kit Harington on Eternals Role: "If Marvel Calls, You Gotta Do It"

As a die-hard fan of both Kit Harington and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I can say with utmost certainty that his journey as Dane Whitman, also known as the Black Knight, has been nothing short of exhilarating. His candid admission about taking on the role when Marvel came calling only adds to my admiration for him. After all, who wouldn’t leap at the opportunity to join the grand tapestry that is the MCU?

Three years have passed since Kit Harington first appeared as Dane Whitman in the MCU’s Eternals, and although there’s no clear indication of his character’s future within the universe, there were rumors that he would reappear in some capacity for the Mahershala Ali-led Blade film, set to hit theaters on November 7, 2025. However, Harington is now sharing insights about his time as the potential Black Knight by being straightforward about why he accepted the role: it’s simply because Marvel asked him to do so.

“I won’t feign acceptance of the role just because it was unique and captivating,” Harington explained to GQ (as reported by Variety). “If Marvel comes knocking, you have to answer.”

Currently, it appears Kit Harington’s Marvel future is uncertain. Although there was speculation when The Eternals debuted in 2021 that a sequel would be made, Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, recently stated that no plans for The Eternals 2 are currently underway. However, footage from the upcoming Captain America: New World suggests that the film will delve back into events from The Eternals, focusing particularly on the emergence of the Celestial Tiamut in the ocean.

Kit Harington, who has acted in popular franchises beyond Marvel, also discussed the prospect of a “Game of Thrones” sequel spinoff series announced in 2022. This potential show, centered around Jon Snow, has yet to progress due to Harington and the team involved not finding an idea compelling enough to move forward with enthusiasm.

As a seasoned storyteller with a wealth of experience under my belt, I can empathize with Kit Harington’s dilemma. When HBO approached him with an idea, his initial response was a firm “no.” However, upon reflection, he found himself intrigued by the possibility of exploring the life of a soldier beyond the confines of war. The story could have been impactful and meaningful, leaving something significant to say and share.
