As a long-time Marvel enthusiast who’s witnessed the cosmic tapestry unravel from the pages of comic books to the silver screen, I can hardly contain my excitement about the upcoming Marvel Studios’ Nova series for Disney+! The fact that Ed Bernero, known for his work on Criminal Minds and Third Watch, has been appointed as head writer and showrunner is a testament to the seriousness with which Marvel is approaching this project.
In a recent development, it’s been announced that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has a new project in the pipeline. ComicBook revealed that Marvel Studios is working on a series for Disney+ titled “Nova.” Subsequently, Deadline disclosed that the creator of “Third Watch” and former showrunner of “Criminal Minds,” Ed Bernero, has been appointed as the lead writer and producer for this series. Contrasting previous iterations where Richard Rider and Sam Alexander utilized the Nova Force as the human rocket, Marvel Studios’ “Nova” will primarily focus on the original wearer of the bullethead helmet: Rich Rider.
According to reports, Sabir Pirzada, who was initially assigned to write Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel, has been replaced by Bernero in the project he signed up for back in 2022. Later on, Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, along with Brad Winderbaum, head of streaming, television, and animation at Marvel Studios, confirmed to ComicBook that Richard Rider’s Nova is expected to make his appearance in the MCU sometime between 2027 and 2028.
We have a strong affection for the character Nova. We’re currently in the initial stages of development for Nova, as Winderbaum shared with ComicBook earlier this year. Marvel Studios now operates differently, more like a traditional studio. We’re focusing on development over production at the moment. There are plans to develop Nova, and I personally share the same love for Nova and Rich Rider. I hope it eventually makes it to the screen.
The TV show “Nova,” written by Bernero, has been added to Marvel’s live-action television lineup. This collection already includes “Daredevil: Born Again” (March 4, 2025), overseen by “Marvel’s The Punisher” writer-producer Dario Scardapane; “Ironheart” (June 24), led by Chinaka Hodge; “Wonder Man” (Dec. 2025) by Andrew Guest; and the “Vision Quest” (2026), starring Paul Bettany, produced by Terry Matalas, who is also behind “Star Trek: Picard.” Bernero’s past works include episodes for the crime drama series “Criminal Minds,” its spinoff “Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior” that he created, and the crime-thriller series “Crossing Lines.
Marvel’s Nova: Richard Rider, Explained
Richard “Rich” Rider first appeared in issue #1 of 1976’s comic book Nova, written by Marv Wolfman and illustrated by John Buscema and Joe Sinnott. In this debut, Rider was established as the new wielder of cosmic powers, which Rhomann Dey (portrayed by John C. Reilly in the Guardians of the Galaxy films) had been forced to pass on from his dying body on Earth.
In a remarkable transformation, Rider became Nova, the human rocket, granting him the extraordinary abilities to soar through the skies at speeds faster than sound and tap into the Nova Force energy, a cosmic power shared by the Xandarian Nova Corps – an intergalactic military force. Assuming the role of Nova Prime (commonly referred to as Nova), Rider was connected mentally with the Xandarian Worldmind, serving as its host body. This Worldmind is essentially an artificial intelligence system, initially known as computer PRIME, designed for information maintenance on a planetary scale.
Nova and the Champions of Xandar
Among Nova’s initial adversaries in the early issues of Volume 1 possessed energy-absorbing or -siphoning abilities. These foes included the one who killed Dey, the extraterrestrial Zorr the Conqueror, Megaman, and the Xandarian Powerhouse, alongside others like the Condor, Diamondhead, Corruptor, Photon, the villain Sandman from Spider-Man, and the immortal mutant wizard Anath-Na Mut, as well as the Sphinx. Over the course of the first 25 issues, Nova fought these characters on Earth. Later, during a battle with the Skrulls, Nova formed the Champions of Xandar, which included Xandarians such as Thoran Rul and Tanak Valt, the Centurion.
Following her decision to relinquish the Nova Force to Xandar for a life on Earth as an ordinary human, Queen Adora subtly reclaimed a piece of its power and kept it hidden. After the destruction of Xandar and the Nova Corps by Nebula, Thanos’ granddaughter, Rider’s powers were restored. He then teamed up with Night Thrasher, Namorita, Firestar, Speedball, and Marvel Boy to form the New Warriors.
After some time, I made my way back to the cosmos, becoming Centurion Prime, head of the Nova Corps, tasked with rebuilding Xandar. Sadly, it was all undone when Annihilus and his Annihilation Wave obliterated our planet (during the Annihilation event). Over the passage of time, I’ve forged bonds with Star-Lord and the Guardians of the Galaxy, joining forces to safeguard not just space, but also my beloved Earth. Most recently, Samuel “Sam” Alexander, son of my predecessor, Jesse Alexander, took up the mantle of Nova as a member of both the Avengers and the new Champions alongside rising heroes like Miles Morales and Ms. Marvel.
