Marvel’s Plan for the X-Men May Reveal the Next MCU Phase Title

The upcoming stages of the Marvel Cinematic Universe may focus on introducing the X-Men characters. At present, fans are engrossed in the Multiverse Saga, expected to culminate in “Avengers: Secret Wars”. Characters like mutants have been subtly introduced in projects such as “Ms. Marvel”, “The Marvels”, “Deadpool & Wolverine”, and “Captain America: Brave New World”, with even more beloved characters set to appear in the MCU during “Avengers: Doomsday”. Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige has been secretive about their plans for the X-Men, particularly how they will intersect with teams such as the Avengers, Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts, and Guardians of the Galaxy. However, a peek into Feige’s long-term strategies hints at the potential direction of the MCU once the X-Men are integrated.

An article in The Wall Street Journal highlighted Marvel Studios and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). A specific section of this piece provides insights that might reveal what the upcoming phase of the MCU could be named.

According to an article in The Wall Street Journal, similar to how he envisioned Marvel Studios’ initial phase, Feige has a broad plan for his company’s future on the big screen. The forthcoming Avengers films are rumored to integrate the X-Men, one of Marvel’s most renowned superhero teams, into the MCU. Feige has reportedly shared with colleagues that he has a 10-year blueprint for these characters. Given this 10-year timeframe, it seems plausible that the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe could be centered around the X-Men and be referred to as “The Mutant Saga.”

*Note: Thunderbolts is a team of supervillains and anti-heroes in the Marvel Comics universe, not necessarily part of the MCU as of now.

In the lead-up to the development of Deadpool & Wolverine, Kevin Feige, on one of his many occasions discussing the X-Men, mentioned this project. Interestingly, it marks the first X-Men movie undertaken by Marvel Studios; all previous projects were under 20th Century Fox, which later became part of Disney following its acquisition.

In simpler terms, Feige said in 2024 that it’s like having too many wonderful choices, which is something they often say at Marvel. There are many fantastic X-Men characters in the Deadpool & Wolverine movie, as well as in all Fox’s X-Men films. Moreover, there are numerous great X-Men characters who have yet to appear on the big screen. So, just like we did when we worked with Sony for Spider-Man, you can expect a blend of familiar and new X-Men characters.

Feige expressed that it was thrilling for them to witness the resurgence and rekindling of interest in the X-Men ’97 universe. He also hinted at the soap opera aspects of this world, which is what excites them about eventually incorporating it into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

If “Avengers: Secret Wars” follows its comic book origin closely, the MCU might undergo a significant transformation by the film’s end. With fewer characters such as Iron Man, Black Widow, and Captain America (Steve Rogers) appearing, it seems logical for Marvel Studios to shift focus towards two of their newer franchises: the Fantastic Four and X-Men. Given the anticipation among fans to witness these characters under the Marvel banner, this transition could be quite exciting.
