As a longtime Marvel enthusiast who vividly remembers the days of my youth spent pouring over these iconic storylines, I can hardly contain my excitement for these upcoming omnibus collections! Back in 2004, when Brian Michael Bendis disassembled the Avengers and ushered in a new era with his groundbreaking New Avengers series, little did I know that this shakeup would have such a lasting impact on the Marvel Universe.
2004 saw Brian Michael Bendis dismantling the Avengers. This group of Earth’s strongest champions – Captain America, Iron Man, Wasp, Yellowjacket, Hawkeye, Falcon, Captain Britain, Ant-Man, and Scarlet Witch – formally disbanded following an assault from Wanda Maximoff’s reality-bending chaos magic. The five-part “Avengers Disassembled” saga eventually paved the way for Marvel to reintroduce Avengers as the New Avengers, welcoming street-level heroes such as Spider-Man, Luke Cage, Spider-Woman, and Wolverine into their team.
In the comic series “Secret War,” Nick Fury, under S.H.I.E.L.D.’s leadership, assembled a covert team consisting of Captain America, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Luke Cage, Daredevil, and Black Widow. Their mission was to topple the government of Latveria, which resulted in a significant change in the existing order. This should not be confused with Jonathan Hickman’s intergalactic saga titled “Secret Wars.”
Marvel plans to celebrate the 20th anniversaries of two iconic storylines written by Bendis in 2025 by releasing two omnibus editions. The first volume of the “New Avengers” omnibus, which has been out of print for a while, will be reprinted in January. This massive 1208-page collection includes “Avengers Disassembled”, “Avengers Finale”, the initial 31 issues of “New Avengers” – where characters like Sentry and Ronin made their debut – as well as tie-ins with “Civil War”.
In April, a compilation titled “The New Avengers Omnibus Volume 1” will hit the shelves. This comprehensive collection encompasses the entire “Secret War” storyline beautifully illustrated by Gabriele Dell’Otto.
