As a seasoned gamer and longtime Marvel fanatic, I can confidently say that the latest news about Spider-Man 4 has me buzzing with excitement! The switch from Jon Watts to Destin Daniel Cretton is a bold move, but considering his successful stint with Shang-Chi, I’m optimistic.
Today, there’s been confirmation that Marvel Studios is pushing ahead with Spider-Man 4 without Jon Watts as director, instead opting for Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. In 2021, Marvel secured a deal with Cretton, indicating their eagerness to collaborate further. Despite concerns over the fate of Shang-Chi 2 due to a lack of updates, Cretton had previously moved on from the sequel to work on Avengers: The Kang Dynasty project (which he also left). However, it seems that everything can be rectified by bringing Simu Liu back as Shang-Chi in Spider-Man 4.
Marvel Studios Spider-Man movies always include other MCU characters
In the film “Spider-Man: Homecoming”, Robert Downey Jr’s character Tony Stark took on a significant role, serving as a guide for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker as he found his bearings and developed into a superhero within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Subsequently, in “Spider-Man: Far From Home”, Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury reprised this mentorship. Lastly, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” introduces Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, providing assistance to Peter when his true identity is exposed to the public.
Personally speaking, it’s no secret that Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man films always feature a significant player from the MCU. Introducing Simu Liu as Shang-Chi for Spider-Man 4 doesn’t just add a familiar face to the movie, but it solidifies the film as a more integral part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Moreover, it offers fans another chance to see Simu Liu bring his unique portrayal of Shang-Chi to life on screen.
After the debut of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” in 2021, Liu has been absent from any subsequent Marvel Studios productions. However, Liu is scheduled to make appearances in the animated series “Marvel’s What If…?” and “Marvel Zombies,” although these episodes have yet to air. To keep the audience aware that this character remains active in the MCU, an appearance by Liu in “Spider-Man 4” would be ideal, as it would also offer a platform for setting up his next leading role within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Shang-Chi appearing solves a major MCU plot thread
In the finale of “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, Tom Holland chooses to erase his personal identity, including friendships, relationships, and more, by having Doctor Strange cause everyone to forget who Peter Parker is, as opposed to simply forgetting Spider-Man. This is demonstrated when Holland’s character, Peter, speaks with Happy Hogan but is not recognized, and later encounters Ned and MJ who also fail to recognize him.
In the upcoming Spider-Man 4, it’s expected that Peter reconnecting with MJ will play a crucial role in the film’s storyline. To prevent a situation where multiple characters regaining their memory of Peter from happening simultaneously, which could potentially lead to repetitive themes, introducing Shang-Chi as a character familiar with Peter Parker can be beneficial. This way, the sequel can avoid having a character who already knows Peter Parker navigate repetitive plot points.
Spider-Man 4 teased a street level turn for the hero
In the finale of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” it appeared as though the Spider-Man character was returning to his role as a friendly neighborhood hero. Unlike Shang-Chi’s standalone film, which was an action-packed adventure akin to Marvel Comics, it has ties to the street-level heroes who have been battling on the ground. The world where Shang-Chi resides in the MCU is a realm that Spider-Man hasn’t yet explored, featuring some incredibly eccentric villains (a common element for Spider-Man) and creatures of fantasy, which are relatively scarce within the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole.
If Sony and Marvel decide against their plans for Spider-Man 4, introducing Shang-Chi could still work out nicely. The last time we encountered Shang-Chi in the Marvel Universe was when he was being called upon by Wong to potentially join The Avengers, regardless of the team’s future shape post-Avengers: Endgame. Given that Spider-Man 4 seems to be aiming for a release somewhere between Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, it would make sense for this gap to be filled by a new member representing Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
There’s a bit of time left until the cameras start filming Spider-Man 4, as suggested by recent reports, the filming is expected to commence next year. As we approach the countdown to production, it’s likely that we’ll soon hear some announcement about which Marvel character will be featured in the movie. At this moment, there’s a strong possibility that Shang-Chi could make an appearance – it seems like the right move for Marvel.
