Initially, when Marvel’s Spider-Man debuted on the PS4 in 2018, it received overwhelmingly positive reviews from fans of Spider-Man. However, as time passed, opinions about the series began to shift. The turning point wasn’t with Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, but rather with the 2020 remaster of the original game, which controversially redesigned Peter Parker, causing significant backlash. Then, in 2023, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was released to acclaim. Yet, it seems like the public’s feelings towards it have deteriorated since its release.
The criticisms towards Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man series, particularly regarding the character MJ, are quite prominent on their official Reddit page. Instead of just positive remarks, there are numerous harsh comments about the developer and a significant amount of criticism directed at MJ and the sections involving her in both games. It’s rare to find any favorable opinions about MJ on this platform, but you will encounter plenty of constructive criticism instead.
An excellent illustration is found in one of the most popular Reddit posts from the past week, implying that Insomniac Games may have overlooked fan suggestions regarding the character up until now.
How Insomniac looks at you when you tell them you don’t want MJ to be a Lois Lane knockoff.

As a gamer, I can see that my post seems to resonate with many others, judging by its popularity. And it’s not just the numbers; the responses in the comments appear to share the same viewpoint as my original post too.
The comment says, “She’s just like John Wick in version 2; she can practically take down any opponent with a single shot. Not even Peter and Miles have that ability. What’s more, a group of trained mercenaries seem less intimidating when they are easily defeated by a news reporter who has no superpowers.
If you found this post interesting but still craving for more, let me tell you that it’s not just this one – there are several other posts this week that have been quite popular, taking aim at Insomniac Games and the character in question. Here’s another example:

“I’ve got to say, I’m really disappointed with the latest update on Ratchet & Clank from Insomniac Games. The character development for this game feels lackluster compared to previous versions.”
This one also expresses some criticism towards Insomniac Games and the character in Ratchet & Clank.
Insomniac when it comes to making MJ annoying:

The main critique in this comment is that the character is either uninteresting or irritating, and the way she’s portrayed doesn’t make her appealing. It seems as though the writers are trying too hard to make us like her.
To put it simply, the MJ sections in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 aren’t as problematic as they were in the first game, but they’re still noticeable and quite frustrating. On a related note, as suggested earlier, Mary Jane is rather dull, repetitive, and uninteresting. Interestingly, much like Peter Parker, she underwent a significant makeover in the second game, which unfortunately didn’t enhance her character.
It’s intriguing to consider the input that Insomniac Games might incorporate in Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 and MJ. However, based on the previous installment, it seems there may not be significant alterations in the sequel.
