As a lifelong Star Wars enthusiast who’s spent countless hours immersed in the galaxy far, far away, I can confidently say that Marvel’s latest offering, Battle of Jakku – Insurgency Rising, is nothing short of breathtaking. The comic expertly weaves together threads from various Star Wars media, creating a rich and engaging tapestry that bridges the original trilogy and the sequels.
The characters Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine perished during the decisive conflict between the Galactic Empire and the Rebels in “Return of the Jedi.” However, the Empire, along with the Inquisitorius – a group of Jedi hunters commanded by Darth Sidious who were active since he issued Order 66 – continue to exist. This ongoing story is featured in Marvel’s latest “Star Wars” comic, titled “Battle of Jakku – Insurgency Rising” which forms part of the “Battle of Jakku” trilogy. This series takes place following the Battle of Endor and leads up to the final battle of the Galactic Civil War on Jakku, serving as a bridge between the original “Star Wars” trilogy and the sequel trilogy.
Admiral Gallius Rax, Palpatine’s protege, set off the Emperor’s backup plan called the Contingency and Operation: Cinder – a scheme designed by Palpatine to destroy the Empire after his demise. At the same time, Imperial Grand Moff Ubrik Adelhard, who remained loyal to the Empire rather than the Emperor, isolated the Anoat sector to keep up the appearance that the Empire had won against the Rebel Alliance at the Battle of Endor.
Following the burial of Anakin Skywalker on Endor, Luke Skywalker, a Jedi Knight, was drawn by the Force to Pillio. There, he found himself seeking an old compass hidden within Palpatine’s observatory. However, upon retrieving the relic, Yuan Howzell and Yupe Tashu’s Acolytes of the Beyond attacked Skywalker. This artifact is said to guide one of the remaining Jedi towards Ossus, as seen in “Star Wars: The Mandalorian”, and Ahch-To, where Luke Skywalker lived out his exile, as depicted in “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”.

In the course of events, Leia Organa and Mon Mothma were rallying Rebel spies for a perilous venture to the Anoat sector. Among these were B-wing starfighter pilot Rynn Zenat, mechanic Jarek Yeager, intel operative Therisa Alern, and Kes Dameron, father of future Resistance pilot Poe Dameron. Meanwhile, Zeva Bliss and the smugglers of Kijimi decided to side with Adelhard’s remaining Imperial forces.

In the aftermath of the events depicted in “Return of the Jedi,” several members of the Inquisitorius have met their end. The Grand Inquisitor was destroyed aboard Governor Tarkin’s Destroyer in “Star Wars Rebels.” The Second Sister was executed by Darth Vader in “Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.” Darth Maul, a former Sith Lord, took the lives of Fifth Brother and Seventh Sister. Ahsoka and Marek were responsible for Sixth Brother’s demise, while Ninth Sister fell battling Cal Kestis in “Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.” Vader also claimed the lives of Thirteenth Sister and Tualon Yaluna in the novel “Inquisitor: Rise of the Red Blade.” The whereabouts or fates of other members, such as Third Sister and Fourth Sister (as portrayed in “Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi”), were unknown by 9 BBY. The third installment of “Star Wars: Battle of Jakku – Insurgency Rising” is currently on sale from Marvel Comics! The climactic fourth issue will be available on November 6th. The storyline continues with the four-part series, “Star Wars: Battle of Jakku – Republic Under Siege,” set for release in November and concluding with the four-part “Star Wars: Battle of Jakku – Last Stand” in December.
