Marvel’s Thunderbolts* Billboards Are Being Updated for the Team’s New Name

Caution: Plot details from Thunderbolts* may be revealed! Marvel Studios is not concerned about revealing the end of Thunderbolts* for those who haven’t seen it yet. The movie has been released just three days ago, but on Sunday, some of its largest billboards were updated to display the team’s official name: The New Avengers. Pictures of these giant advertisements surfaced on social media as well, which means that fans who didn’t catch the movie already know one significant part of the ending, even if they don’t know everything else. Some viewers criticized it as premature for Marvel advertisers to assume this, feeling that those who couldn’t see it during opening weekend are being penalized. Others saw it as a grand way to usher in the new era for the MCU.

In simpler terms, the movie “Thunderbolts” focuses on a band of underrated characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe who join forces to combat a worldwide danger despite facing numerous challenges and skepticism. They humorously adopt the name Thunderbolts initially, but it doesn’t last for long. By the end of the film, they are recognized as “The New Avengers,” and in the post-credit scene 14 months later, there is a dispute over who should be called the true Avengers, with Sam Wilson being one of the contenders.

On Sunday, at least one billboard in Los Angeles was updated, sparking conversations on various social media platforms. The extent to which this rebranding will be implemented is uncertain, as Marvel has been aggressively promoting their new project, Thunderbolts, through TV commercials, online ads, and outdoor advertisements near movie theaters.

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I’ve been pondering over Marvel’s latest move, and it seems to stir quite a debate among commentators. They’ve been flooding posts on X with questions about why Marvel would take such an early step, often suggesting it was a tactic to pressure fans into watching these movies on opening weekend or even opening night from now on. With the likelihood of being bombarded by billboards like this one in L.A., it does seem like the most prudent way to dodge spoilers. However, others have taken it in stride, mentioning they’ve muted Thunderbolts on their social media feeds until they can catch the movie themselves.

Indeed, it’s accurate to say that Marvel is relying on audience support to bounce back from a string of less successful films. While Deadpool and Wolverine were well-received, The Marvels and Captain America: Brave New World didn’t fare as well at the box office or critically. To reverse this pattern, Marvel needs to make a swift comeback with their upcoming movies like The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Avengers: Doomsday, which are crucial installments leading up to the climax of the Multiverse Saga.

Thunderbolts* is in theaters now in the U.S. Previous Marvel titles are streaming now on Disney+.
