Marvel’s Thunderbolts* Final Trailer Includes Surprising Avengers References

A remarkable day arrived, a day unlike any preceding one, when Earth’s most formidable champions found themselves banded together against a shared adversary. On that day, the Avengers were conceived — to confront the enemies no individual hero could overcome. However, these aren’t the heroes we know, and the Thunderbolts are not the Avengers. In truth, the team assembled by CIA Director Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) are not heroes in the traditional sense but antiheroes: Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko).

In the trailer for the recently released Thunderbolts movie, Mel (Geraldine Viswanathan) remarks, ‘I was in high school when the Avengers were around. It feels a bit odd that it’s all finished now.’

In 2012’s The Avengers, for the first time, the original team – Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) – united, summoned by Nick Fury’s Avengers Initiative to protect Earth from an extraterrestrial attack. Loki (Tom Hiddleston) was responsible for bringing these powerful heroes together, who would later confront challenges on a scale only matched by the Avengers, including Ultron (James Spader) and Thanos (Josh Brolin). Time and again, they saved Earth, and even the cosmos, from imminent destruction.

However, in the year 2019’s movie Avengers: Endgame, the Avengers team disbanded. Tony Stark and Natasha Romanoff made the ultimate sacrifice with their lives, Steve Rogers retired, Clint Barton decided to re-retire, and Bruce Banner and Thor departed Earth. In their absence, a new group known as the Thunderbolts emerged, tasked with banding together to protect the world from the mysterious Void. Quite a responsibility!

Alexei expresses to Yelena in the movie ‘Black Widow’ (2021) that being a hero is an exceptional duty, something which Yelena’s sister Natasha understood. However, Yelena disagrees, stating, “That’s just a bedtime story.” Like her sister, Yelena has a past as a Red Room-trained assassin, a history that brings her remorse.

Bucky, once a WWII veteran and later brainwashed by Hydra to become an assassin known as the Winter Soldier, shares his experience with the team, reminiscing about his deceased friend Steve. He explains, “I’ve been through what you’re going through now, and the past doesn’t just vanish.” Essentially, he suggests that they can either continue to bear the weight of their past indefinitely… or take action to change it.

As “Under Pressure” by Queen and David Bowie swells, scenes unfold of John Walker striving for redemption while reading “The Fall of a Hero,” Bucky shielding civilians with his vibranium arm, and Ghost employing her quantum phasing powers to rescue a bystander as New York is besieged by the Void. Meanwhile, Yelena voices her doubts, saying, “We can’t do this. No one here is a hero,” during footage of the Thunderbolts acting heroically and the ominous darkness of the Void swallowing the city. “We can’t defeat him on our own. No one can. But we can find a solution. Together.

Jake Schreier, who is known for movies like “Paper Towns” and “Beef,” will be directing the upcoming Marvel film titled “Thunderbolts.” Kevin Feige, famous for productions such as “Deadpool” and “Wolverine,” will produce this movie. The action-packed “Marvel’s Thunderbolts” hits theaters on May 2nd.
