Marvel’s Thunderbolts Poster Redefines Heroism with a Wheaties Twist!

The latest poster for the Marvel Studios movie features the “Thunderbolts” team, symbolically serving breakfast to the champions – a nod to the popular reference. If you haven’t seen the trailer that premiered during the Super Bowl, it might have slipped past you. The Big Game Spot emphasized that the Thunderbolts aren’t traditional heroes, while hinting at the Wheaties cereal brand and its famous slogan “The Breakfast of Champions.” Instead of featuring the Philadelphia Eagles, the Super Bowl champions, on their boxes, Wheaties has chosen to showcase the Thunderbolts as its cover stars.

Marvel Studios unveiled a fresh poster for the upcoming movie titled Thunderbolts, hot on the heels of their Super Bowl ad. The poster imaginatively places the main characters from Thunderbolts on a Wheaties box, with the tagline, “The Breakfast of Heroes*”. At the top, it reads, “Everyone Deserves Another Chance”, while the bottom features the Thunderbolts cast as ingredients: Yelena (played by Florence Pugh), Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) and Bob (Lewis Pullman). The poster also includes a quip about the Thunderbolts Wheaties cereal, “Now with More Bucky!”

*Note: The use of “*” denotes that the actual title may be different.

Thunderbolts* Wheaties poster is a first for Marvel

For the first time, Marvel Studios has crafted a poster like this for one of their projects, specifically for Thunderbolts*. Unlike the Avengers, the Thunderbolts* are not typical heroes, yet they’re Earth’s last defense against a new threat glimpsed in the Super Bowl trailer for Thunderbolts*. Although his identity isn’t confirmed, it’s widely speculated that Lewis Pullman will portray Sentry in Thunderbolts*. The trailer shows him flying and even hurling Red Guardian through a window at the top of the old Avengers Tower.

The Thunderbolts team, who you’ve encountered before in various Marvel productions, have a closer resemblance to the Guardians of the Galaxy than the Avengers. In the first Guardians movie, they introduced characters that were largely unknown to the Marvel Universe and depicted them as lawbreakers. Although the Thunderbolts cast has appeared in previous shows and films, they’ve never been shown as traditional heroes, with only Winter Soldier being an exception due to his history with Hydra. Characters like Ghost and Taskmaster were portrayed as villains in Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Black Widow respectively.

Sebastian Stan has likened the unique dynamic of the dysfunctional superhero team in “Thunderbolts” to John Hughes’ classic teen drama, “The Breakfast Club”. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight on the Golden Globes red carpet, he explained what sets this Marvel film apart. “I believe this movie is quite distinctive and will hold its ground independently,” Stan said. “While these are daring words, there isn’t another Marvel group that we can really compare us to; it’s something unique. The ‘Breakfast Club’ is the best analogy for it – a group of misfits who, hopefully, don’t end up killing each other.

Similar to how the characters in “The Breakfast Club” find themselves bound by detention and ultimately learn to work together despite their differences, so too does the new superteam in the MCU. Just as the unforgettable teens portrayed by Hughes, this team of outcasts, dubbed the Thunderbolts, must initially confront their hostility but eventually learn to cooperate effectively.

Thunderbolts* opens in theaters on May 2nd.
