Artist John Staub has shared sneak peeks of potential designs for Sentry (Lewis Pullman) and his dark counterpart, The Void, from Marvel Studio’s Thunderbolts. On Instagram, he showcased captivating sketches that maintain a strong comic book authenticity. One image displays the Void looming ominously before a massive dark cloud, mirroring the character’s initial appearances in the original Sentry comic book series. Other concepts featured a minimalistic black version of the Sentry’s typical attire, conveying a more morally compromised hero image. The movie ultimately chose to portray The Void as pure darkness, with Pullman’s face concealed by shadows, leaving only two glowing eyes. This decision emphasized The Void’s role as a complete erasure of Bob Reynolds’ identity, rather than simply a different costume.
In “Thunderbolts”, the character Robert “Bob” Reynolds, struggling with a fractured mind due to Project Sentry experiments, develops two immense personas – the heroic Sentry and the destructive Void. The Void becomes the main villain, aiming to spread desolation through a dark dimension that compels people to re-live their traumatic experiences. The story revolves around the Thunderbolts, a team of reformed adversaries and anti-heroes, facing this godlike danger. The climax arrives when the Thunderbolts reach out to Bob Reynolds, offering him companionship and emotional support. This shared empathy helps Bob regain some control over the Void, causing the dark mist to vanish. The decision to portray the Void as an all-consuming, formless darkness effectively illustrates how Bob’s trauma threatened to obliterate his identity.
In the bonus scene after the end credits of Thunderbolts, it’s revealed that Bob Reynolds has been restraining the power of the Void, not using the powers of the Sentry. Meanwhile, Pullman is among the many characters confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday, hinting that we haven’t seen the final chapter of Bob Reynolds and his conflicted personas. Although specifics about Avengers: Doomsday are still secret, it’s probable that the Sentry and the Void will reappear in Marvel Studios’ upcoming blockbuster crossover film.
Thunderbolts* Critical Acclaim And Box Office Hurdles
The lightning-fast Thunderbolts received widespread acclaim, boasting an outstanding 88% critical rating and a staggering 95% audience approval on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the most favorably received MCU Phase 5 production according to these metrics upon its premiere. However, this enthusiastic response didn’t quite translate into blockbuster box office success. The film ultimately grossed approximately $381 million worldwide, against a reported production budget of $180 million. Although it didn’t completely bomb, this revenue falls significantly short of the usual break-even point for films of this size (typically 2.5 times the production budget, equating to around $450 million), when accounting for marketing and distribution expenses as well.
The significant success of the movie “Thunderbolts”, notably the applause for its deep themes, character growth, and direction by Jake Schreier, has had far-reaching effects that go beyond box office earnings. This acclaim has earned Schreier the director’s position for Marvel Studios’ eagerly awaited X-Men film. This move mirrors Marvel’s approach with the Russo brothers, who moved from the critically praised “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” to orchestrating the “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Endgame” series. Giving Schreier control over the introduction of mutants into the MCU, a key component of Marvel’s future strategies post-“Avengers: Secret Wars”, shows that the studio values a directorial vision that can deliver both compelling narratives and audience pleasure, even if the box office returns for “Thunderbolts” were not as strong as anticipated.
