Marvel's Thunderbolts* Star David Harbour Teases Why the Title Has an Asterisk (Exclusive)

As a long-time Marvel fan, I must say that the upcoming movie “Thunderbolts*” has me thoroughly intrigued! The addition of my beloved Red Guardian, Alexei Shostakov, played by the brilliant David Harbour, is already a win in my book.

Next year, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is set for a significant change with the arrival of the team-up movie titled “Thunderbolts*“. This upcoming flick will bring back several heroes and antiheroes from the MCU, among them the beloved character Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian (played by David Harbour). As fans eagerly anticipate the release of the film’s first trailer, Marvel Studios has sparked intrigue by placing an asterisk next to “Thunderbolts” in its title without revealing its meaning. In an interview with ComicBook about his role as a brand ambassador for BoxLunch, Harbour hinted at the importance of the “*” in “Thunderbolts*“, and shared some insights into what viewers can expect from the movie overall.

Harbour clarified that they added the asterisk later on,” or “He said the asterisk was a thought someone had afterwards.” In simpler terms, the speaker is conveying that the asterisk was not originally there but was added at a later time. The speaker also hints that discussing more about it might lead to trouble, and expresses enthusiasm for viewers to see it when they add it themselves.

In response to queries about the buzz surrounding Thunderbolts, Harbour shared that “I’ve been distancing myself from such matters since I find myself constantly encountering AI-generated articles. They seem odd, almost nonsensical. However, I am concerned about misinformation because I don’t want to be influenced by numerous opinions about me. That said, we are indeed staying true to the comics, which is reassuring. There might be some speculation about what people think they know about the comics versus those who have actually read them. Many experts are frustrated with certain aspects. If you revisit it, you might find a different perspective. We’re very committed to this idea, yet it’s surprising because, as far as I know, Red Guardian isn’t involved in any of the Thunderbolts material. They seem to be adding and surprising us with new elements. However, there are numerous changes we’ve made to ensure accuracy to the comics.

In creating a movie, you can’t rely on opinions based on posters or initial glances because everyone seems to have an opinion about it. However, my hope is that people will take the time to watch the entire film before forming their judgments, whether they love it or hate it. I understand that speculation and anticipation are natural, but I believe it’s best to experience the movie firsthand. I am extremely proud of this film we made, and from what I hear internally, it’s playing well. I can’t wait for people to see it because I think it will surprise them in a good way. From the trailer and the shots we’ve released, you might have an idea about its direction within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and I am thrilled to be a part of this new phase.
