Marvel's Thunderbolts: The Top Theories About That Title Asterisk

As a lifelong Marvel fan who has followed every twist and turn in the MCU since its inception, I can confidently say that the title of the upcoming Thunderbolts movie is as intriguing as it is perplexing. The asterisk at the end of “Thunderbolts*” has sparked a flurry of theories among fans, with two leading contenders: a Suicide Squad-style operation or the introduction of the Dark Avengers.

The trailer for Marvel’s Thunderbolts movie has sparked excitement among Marvel Cinematic Universe enthusiasts, but there’s been a lot of discussion about its title. When Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, revealed the official Thunderbolts title with an asterisk (*), it caused quite a stir. Feige hinted that the asterisk was significant and by the end of the movie, fans would realize exactly why it was included.

Of course, Marvel Cinematic Universe enthusiasts have been brainstorming various theories as to why the film Thunderbolts* bears that name. With the trailer now available, two predominant theories have emerged regarding the creative approach behind the title of the movie.

Why Marvel’s Thunderbolts Has an Asterisk in Its Title

Many believe that Thunderbolts is Marvel’s equivalent to DC’s Suicide Squad. There’s a history in the comics of Wilson Fisk/Kingpin assembling his own team, the Thunderbolts, for a dangerous mission against Knull, the symbiote deity. The trailer and past rumors suggest that this may be the plotline for the upcoming Thunderbolts movie.

The trailer footage seemed to make it clear that characters like Yelena/Black Widow II (Florence Pugh), John Walker/US Agent (Wyatt Russell), Ava Starr/Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), and Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko) are all lured to a facility that looks like a Saw-style death trap, and houses “Bob” (Lewis Pullman) who is also the mentally-broken superman known as The Sentry. Add other MCU espionage agents like Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian (David Harbour) and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), and Thunderbolts* seems like it could turn out to be a major “cleaning” operation, where some of the MCU’s biggest spies and assassins all get clipped in one fell swoop, after carrying out some game-changing high-risk mission (like freeing The Sentry).

As the credits roll on the movie, it’s quite possible that only one or two members of the Thunderbolts team will still be alive (assuming any survive at all). This unexpected turn of events, should it occur, would be a daring and startling twist – exactly the kind of fresh shock the MCU needs at this point.

Marvel's Thunderbolts: The Top Theories About That Title Asterisk

A popular assumption is that the movie titled as “Thunderbolts” (with an asterisk) might not actually be its official name. Some speculate that Marvel Studios could be unveiling the long-awaited Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) version of “Dark Avengers.

Following the secret takeover depicted in the comic book “Secret Invasion,” Norman Osborn capitalized on the public’s waning trust in superheroes by renaming his team, the Thunderbolts, as the Avengers. Osborn donned Stark-made armor to assume the role of “Iron Patriot,” while villains like Bullseye adopted the guise of Hawkeye and Mac Gargan’s Venom impersonated Spider-Man in public. This group of ‘Dark Avengers’ maintained their position under the spotlight until the genuine heroes managed to unite, eventually regaining control over society from the clutches of these villains.

There’s been talk that the tale of Thunderbolts could end up being a sneaky form of job interview and team-building activity. If some members of the squad don’t make it through, those who do will likely be chosen for an unheroic version of the Avengers team. Although nobody truly thinks Marvel Studios would label their project “Dark Avengers,” they could take another approach…

There’s a possibility that the phrase “Thunderbolts” may not show up at all throughout the film. Instead, the movie might begin without any opening credits, and in an unexpected twist at the end, we could see a title card reading either “The Avengers,” “New Avengers,” or “Secret Avengers.” It’s also possible that the final reveal could be a simple word flip, and “Avengers”* could be the surprising punchline of this title game.

Marvel’s Thunderbolts* has a release date of May 2, 2025.
