Marvel’s Thunderbolts* Trailer Has a Major Connection to Loki and The Avengers

As a seasoned gamer and Marvel fanatic with decades of comic book lore etched into my memory banks, I must say that the latest revelations about the Thunderbolts and the resurfacing of Loki’s scepter have sent shivers down my gaming-nerd spine. It’s like a well-orchestrated symphony of nostalgia and anticipation, blending seamlessly into an exhilarating crescendo that leaves me on the edge of my seat.

Viewers have discovered an Easter egg linking to the first Avengers film in the teaser trailer for Thunderbolts. This upcoming team, set to debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appears to be assembled by Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine and consists of characters like Yelena Belova, Winter Soldier, and Red Guardian. Keep your eyes peeled because the Thunderbolts’ storyline promises surprises. Since Thunderbolts is part of the MCU, it shares ties with past movies and series, and it has links to both Loki and The Avengers from Marvel.

At approximately 2 minutes and 20 seconds into the teaser for the movie Thunderbolts, we find Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) exploring an exhibit dedicated to the Battle of New York. This historic event marked the first time that the Avengers joined forces, battling Loki and the Chitauri invasion. The battle was also revisited in a new light during the time heist in Avengers: Endgame. In this exhibit, at the foot of the stairs, a glass case displays Loki’s scepter, a weapon used by Loki to control Hawkeye and Erik Selvig. It was later revealed in Avengers: Age of Ultron that the scepter contained the Mind Stone, which ultimately ended up in the possession of Vision before Thanos forcibly removed it from his head during the events of Avengers: Infinity War.

The MCU journey of Loki’s scepter

Just like in a comic book series, it was Loki who essentially brought about the Avengers team. Seeking power, Loki reached out to Thanos, who in return gave Loki, the trickster deity, a scepter containing the Mind Stone. With this artifact, Loki manipulated Hawkeye and Erik Selvig’s minds, making them act against their will. The Chitauri invasion was eventually halted by the Avengers, with Thor taking Loki back to Asgard for trial.

In “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” Loki’s scepter reappears and is utilized by Baron von Strucker and Hydra for experimental purposes on Wanda and Pietro Maximoff, bestowing them with their extraordinary abilities. However, as revealed in “WandaVision”, Wanda had her powers inherently, and the scepter merely catalyzed their manifestation. Post Strucker’s defeat, Tony Stark and Bruce Banner utilized the scepter to finalize the Ultron Program. The scepter was later seized by Ultron to continue his programming process, unveiling the Mind Stone concealed within it.

It seems that the Loki scepter has been relocated within an exhibition focusing on the Battle of New York. Given Valentina appears to be the latest enigmatic proprietor of Avengers Tower, she might also possess Loki’s scepter and is using the exhibition as a platform to display her recently acquired possessions.

Thunderbolts* arrives in theaters on May 2, 2025.
