Marvel's Ultimate Sorcerer Supreme Debuts and It's Not Who Fans Expected

As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the latest developments in Ultimate Black Panther have truly piqued my interest. The reveal of the Ultimate Sorcerer Supreme is shaping up to be a game-changer, and it seems we might have a new player stepping into Doctor Strange’s shoes – or rather, cloak.

In the Marvel Universe, Doctor Strange holds the title of Sorcerer Supreme, serving as the primary defender against mystical perils. However, this isn’t the case in the Ultimate Universe. The role of Sorcerer Supreme carries significant weight and responsibility. As you might have guessed, not everything stays the same in this new universe – while certain elements remain constant, there are also notable differences. For instance, Black Panther continues to rule over Wakanda with Okoye by his side as queen. Despite this, the conflict between Black Panther and Moon Knight persists. Interestingly, T’Challa’s frantic search for help regarding the mysterious metal Vibranium leads his allies to discover the Ultimate Universe’s equivalent of the Sorcerer Supreme.

In issue #9 of the Ultimate Black Panther series, the creative team consists of Bryan Hill, Stefano Caselli, David Curiel, and VC’s Cory Petit. A significant segment of the narrative follows Killmonger and Storm, who are on a mission to locate the new Sorcerer Supreme. Storm retains her mutant power to control weather, while Killmonger embarks on his Ultimate adventure as an ally to Black Panther. Their hunt for the Sorcerer Supreme leads them to a fortress in Eastern Europe, run by a villain from the Maker’s council. As they ponder whether to sneak in or use force, several individuals are hurled out of windows above, including a torture doctor – a potential omen of trouble for the imprisoned sorcerer.

Nevertheless, upon entering, Killmonger and Storm discover not only further loss of life, but also a mystic who clearly isn’t held against their will.

Ultimate Sorcerer Supreme may not be a hero

As Storm and Killmonger venture deeper into the compound, an eerie laughter echoes around them. The text bubble of the mysterious figure is black with white text, suggesting a dark, possibly supernatural force at work. When asked by the sorcerer if they are friends, Killmonger replies that they could become so if given the chance. However, the Sorcerer Supreme, speaking from the shadows, expresses doubt, saying, “I… don’t think… I believe you.

Killmonger continues by stating that someone (Black Panter) seeks aid, yet the sorcerer has been jailed for more than three years without receiving any assistance. Subsequently, an individual emerges from the darkness, manipulated by the sorcerer. They refer to this person as their “puppet.” The man’s form is twisted, and a tear rolls down his cheek, suggesting he is enduring torment under this dreadful control.

In the end, Killmonger enters the chamber where the Sorcerer Supreme was confined, and a momentary fear flickers across his countenance. The Sorcerer Supreme, who sports short black hair and seems to have a muzzle covering her mouth, is shown next. It appears that whoever kept her captive intended to prevent her from speaking, suggesting she may not be Doctor Strange but rather his partner Clea, whom we previously mentioned in passing.

Is Clea Marvel’s new Sorcerer Supreme?

One indication that Doctor Strange might not end up as the Ultimate Sorcerer Supreme is his capture by the Maker during the Ultimate Invasion. The Maker has significantly influenced the Ultimate Universe, preventing its heroes from reaching their intended destinies. Instead, the Maker and his council have molded the Ultimate Universe according to their own designs. Teams like the Ultimates are working to reverse the damage caused by the Maker, but since Stephen Strange was prevented from becoming the Sorcerer Supreme, it leaves room for someone else, such as Clea, to take on that role instead.

It’s possible that the enigmatic Sorcerer Supreme, whose dialogue appears within a dark speech bubble, could be Clea, given her association with the Dark Dimension. Interestingly, upcoming covers and solicitations for Ultimate Black Panther depict this Sorcerer Supreme donning an attire reminiscent of Stephen Strange’s in the primary Marvel Universe. Notably, after the events of Death of Doctor Strange, Clea briefly assumed the role of Sorcerer Supreme. Additionally, following the Blood Hunt storyline on Earth-616, Doctor Doom took over as the Sorcerer Supreme from Doctor Strange.

In the near future, we expect to discover who holds the title of the Supreme Sorcerer.
