Michael Giacchino isn’t preparing another “Werewolf by Night” project for Marvel. Instead, as both composer, director, and comic book writer, he has taken charge of Marvel Studios’ first special presentation on Disney+. This black-and-white homage to horror films features Gael García Bernal as Jack Russell, a man who is afflicted with transforming into a ravenous werewolf under the full moon. Following this, Marvel will release the horror-inspired live-action series “Agatha All Along,” and later in the year, the animated “Marvel Zombies.” The Blade movie featuring Mahershala Ali is still awaited for a future release.
This summer, composer Giacchino will introduce himself to the Marvel Comics world through a fresh “Werewolf by Night” comic series that’s part of the main Marvel Universe. He expresses eagerness to re-explore Jack’s character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well.
Giacchino expressed that he has an idea for expanding the story we developed for television, but it doesn’t quite fit with the ongoing events in Jack’s life within the Marvel comics universe. So, there’s some maneuvering needed to make it work.
Marvel Studios released the “Werewolf” film with a second Special Presentation titled “Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special” about a month later in November 2022, which was a Christmas-themed production. This marked the end of the Special Presentations until Marvel announced another one featuring Jon Bernthal as “The Punisher” connected to the Daredevil: Born Again series, scheduled for 2026.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve been following the recent changes at Disney, particularly their decision to scale back on streaming content, a shift from the strategy established under the leadership of former CEO Bob Chapek. This adjustment has left composer Michael Giacchino wondering about the future direction of the upcoming “Werewolf” project in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
He expressed his strong desire for another ‘Werewolf by Night‘ [special], saying, ‘I can’t wait! We seem to be in a period of adjustment within the industry, and once things find their new rhythm, we’ll decide on our next steps regarding that project.’
2024 saw Disney CEO Bob Iger informing shareholders about a shift in production strategy. This adjustment aimed at improving quality, an emphasis Iger emphasized would be especially applicable to the Marvel franchise.
Brave New World in February, with two more movies, Thunderbolts and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, scheduled for 2025. On television, Marvel will air a total of six streaming series this year, including Eyes of Wakanda and Marvel Zombies.
Werewolf by Night is streaming in both black-and-white and in color on Disney+.
