Marvel’s What If…? Imagines Thanos as Wolverine in the MCU

As a seasoned comic book enthusiast with over three decades of collecting under my belt, I must say that Marvel Studios’ “What If…?” has been an absolute joy to watch. Each episode presents an exciting and fresh take on our beloved characters, pushing the boundaries of imagination and storytelling.

The introduction of alternate versions of characters like Captain Carter, T’Challa Star-Lord, Storm (the Goddess of Thunder), and Agatha Harkness has been particularly captivating. The series finale, in particular, was a visual feast with its multiverse mashups, including the intriguing amalgamation of Wolverine and Thanos – Weapon Infinity as I’d like to call it.

I must admit, I did wish for more mutants this season, especially a Hugh Jackman-voiced Wolverine episode. Alas, hindsight is 20/20. However, the promise of future episodes gives me hope that we might yet get to party with those iconic characters.

On a lighter note, I can’t help but wonder what a Spider-Ghost Rider or a Moon Knight Blade would look like in action. Maybe one day we’ll see these amalgamations come to life on the big screen! Until then, I’ll be eagerly awaiting the next installment of Marvel’s “What If…?” on Disney+.

In this Marvel Studios collaboration between Deadpool and Wolverine, they delved into the multiverse by introducing several versions of Wolverine, mainly played by Hugh Jackman. These included the comic-true-to-life miniature Wolverine; the eyepatch-donning Patch; the one-armed Age of Apocalypse Weapon X; Old Man Logan; a Wolverine in classic John Byrne’s brown and tan attire; and surprisingly, Cavillrine – the former Superman actor Henry Cavill’s Wolverine who was smoking a cigar.

Following three exciting seasons, Marvel’s What If…? series featured alternate character versions such as Captain Carter (Peggy Carter), Star-Lord (Black Panther), Storm (the Goddess of Thunder), and Agatha Harkness (the Cosmic Queen). The grand finale saw Uatu the Watcher (Jeffrey Wright) narrating a series of multiverse mix-ups, showcasing various combinations. One such blend was Weapon X Thanos, a fusion between Wolverine and the Mad Titan, Thanos.

Weapon Infinity

As a lifelong comic book enthusiast and collector, I can’t help but be thrilled about the Wolverine 50th anniversary variant cover featuring our favorite clawed mutant wielding the Infinity Gauntlet. Having grown up reading the original “Infinity Gauntlet” series in 1991, it brings back fond memories of my childhood and the awe I felt when Thanos first donned the gauntlet to become the Mad Titan. Seeing Wolverine step into those iconic shoes, even if only for this special cover, is a testament to the enduring appeal of both characters and the creative ingenuity of modern comic book artists. It’s moments like these that make me appreciate the ever-evolving nature of comics and the way they can bring together different universes in unexpected yet delightful ways.

Previously on “What If…?”, instead of being the villain we know, Thanos, voiced by Josh Brolin, was depicted as part of the Ravagers alongside T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), Yondu (Michael Rooker), and his daughter Nebula (Karen Gillan). In a different universe, it was Thanos who sent Gamora to pursue Iron Man on the planet Sakaar. Meanwhile, in another timeline, Thanos had become a zombie and possessed the Infinity Stones.

The “What If… What If?” series finale on Sunday showcased a variety of unique character combinations, including Robbie Reyes’ Ghost Rider as a flame-skulled samurai, a six-armed Spider-Man, and the Maestro Hulk as a Master of the Mystic Arts. Among these blends, viewers also saw Ironheart taking on the role of the Punisher, Kingo merging with Iron Man, Jubilee becoming the Silver Surfer, Ms. Marvel teaming up with Wasp, Blade sharing powers with Moon Knight, Scarlet Witch paired with Howard the Duck, and Shang-Chi joining forces with Star-Lord.

In the realm of Marvel’s “What If…?” comics, these character mashups have become a common feature. Since its inception in 1977, this anthology series has introduced notable characters such as Spider-Girl (Betty Brant), Thordis (Jane Foster as Thor), the Juggernaut (Charles Xavier), Iron Punisher (Frank Castle), and Tony Stark’s Sorcerer Supreme version of Iron Man.

What if Wolverine Was in What If…?

Looking back, it seems we regret our decisions a bit, as establishing and executing these projects can take time. We could have incorporated more mutants this season, but at that point, we weren’t aware that Marvel Studios was going to regain the Fox X-Men properties. “So, unfortunately, we missed out on a Wolverine episode,” Andrews remarked. “Perhaps there will be additional What If…? episodes in the future, allowing us to collaborate with those characters.
