As a film enthusiast with over two decades of comic book-inspired movie-watching under my belt, I must say that the latest trailer for Marvel’s What If…? Season 3 has me buzzing like Mjolnir itself! The prospect of Storm wielding Thor’s hammer is not only an exciting twist but also a tantalizing hint at what’s to come in the MCU’s grand finale – Avengers: Secret Wars.
The Season 3 trailer for Marvel’s “What If…?” series intriguingly linked itself to “Avengers: Secret Wars” by depicting Storm, from the X-Men, brandishing Thor’s enchanted hammer, Mjolnir. This connection stems from the comics that form the basis of the MCU’s epic crossover film series, where Storm was also found to be worthy of wielding Thor’s divine powers.
What Is Marvel’s Battleworld in Secret Wars?
In the initial 1984 “Secret Wars” comic book series, things were rather simple. The main characters – Marvel’s mightiest heroes and most formidable villains – found themselves whisked away to Battleworld by the Beyonder for a grand fight. Their goal? To demonstrate their worth in an ultimate battlefield. But in the 2015 reboot of “Secret Wars”, which serves as the main influence for the upcoming movie, things got considerably more intricate and had profound impacts on entire universes.
In the 2015 comic book storyline “Secret Wars,” the multiverse was at risk due to devastating events called “incursions,” where universes clashed, as depicted in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” By seizing the power of beings akin to gods known as the Beyonders, Doctor Doom managed to gather pieces of obliterated dimensions to construct Battleworld, which became the sole survivor of the Marvel Multiverse. This amalgamation of worlds was ruled by Doom, who declared himself its “God Emperor.” With Robert Downey Jr. reprising his role as Doctor Doom in the MCU’s “Multiversal Saga,” it appears that something akin to this situation might unfold in “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.
In this fresh Battleworld constructed by Doom, it was split into separate realms, each symbolizing shards of obliterated dimensions. These lands were administered by appointed rulers, either Barons or Baronesses, with clear boundaries demarcating them. To maintain order within his newly established universe, the God Emperor Doom employed a unique police force, known as the Thor Corps. These combatants functioned as Doom’s peacekeepers across all realms.
In the Thor Corps, each member demonstrated their value by mastering a unique variant of Mjolnir. As anticipated, this team comprised various forms of Thor from different realms. Yet, it also included unexpected members such as Gamora, Groot, and Storm. Thus, with Storm yielding Mjolnir in Season 3 of What If…?, Marvel Studios might be hinting at her involvement in Avengers: Secret Wars.
Avengers: Secret Wars May Debut the MCU’s Live-Action Storm (& Other Mutants)
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve been eagerly speculating about Marvel Studios’ upcoming blockbuster, “Avengers: Secret Wars.” The recent appearance of Storm in “What If…?” has me believing that this is another piece of the puzzle Marvel is carefully assembling. Kevin Feige, Marvel’s mastermind, recently confirmed at D23 Brazil that the X-Men will play a pivotal role in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), particularly following “Secret Wars.
In Battleworld, Marvel could be weaving together all the unresolved Mutant storylines left from the “Multiversal Saga.” The show Ms. Marvel has confirmed Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan as a Mutant in the MCU, and interestingly, The Marvels also features a mid-credits scene that introduces us to an alternate timeline where we meet Beast, a beloved X-Men character. Since Kelsey Grammer, who provided Beast’s voice for the mid-credits scene, is discussing his return to the MCU, it seems Kevin Feige is setting up for a substantial Mutant presence in the future.
As a movie enthusiast, I must confess that the intriguing narrative woven in the film starring Deadpool and Wolverine was nothing short of mind-blowing! Hugh Jackman brilliantly resurrected his role as Logan, while Ryan Reynolds’ character, Wade, embarked on an extraordinary journey to the Sacred Timeline. The movie delved into the mysteries surrounding how various Mutants came to inhabit the Void, a dimension eerily reminiscent of the one we witnessed in Loki. In essence, it seems the Mutants have already established their presence within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. What remains now is a grand crossover event, perhaps akin to Avengers: Secret Wars, to officially transport them into the Sacred Timeline.
Considering all factors, it’s quite tactical when Storm debuts in “What If…?” as it presents viewers with a potent character version that could seamlessly move into live-action for “Secret Wars.” In other words, if Doctor Doom were to shatter the MCU’s multiverse and construct Battleworld, audiences would already be familiar with a powerful X-Men character from “What If…?” who they can root for. This approach was similarly utilized with Hayley Atwell’s “Captain Carter,” who first appeared in “What If…? Season 1 before gaining a live-action heroic role in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Marvel’s “What If…?” Season 3 is set to premiere on Disney+ on December 22. Over a period of eight days, new episodes will be released each day until December 29. In contrast, “Avengers: Secret Wars” is scheduled for a theatrical release on May 7, 2027.
