As a longtime Marvel fan who has witnessed the highs and lows of their cinematic universe, I must say that I am genuinely intrigued by the upcoming Season 3 of “Marvel’s What If…?” The idea of exploring alternate timelines and the story of the Watcher is fascinating, and the way each season manages to intertwine these seemingly disparate stories is commendable.
Marvel’s “What If…?” offers MCU fans an immersive exploration of the Multiverse by delving into alternate timelines that deviate from the main movie narrative. Yet, it’s not just a series about different realities; it also focuses on The Watcher (voiced by Jeffrey Wright), a multidimensional entity who typically adheres to his oath of non-interference for the Multiverse’s sake. Each season cleverly connects seemingly unrelated stories, but the announcement of episode titles for Season 3 leaves us wondering, as it includes episodes centered around the Eternals and surprisingly, Howard the Duck.
For the first time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), The Eternals made their debut in the film “Eternals,” directed by Chloé Zhao. However, this film’s grand scale and the focus on ten previously unrecognized heroes didn’t resonate with critics, leading to it being the first MCU project not to receive a positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes upon release. Moreover, the movie’s conclusion left quite the imprint on the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), as it revealed Earth to be a cosmic egg for a Celestial – one of Marvel’s mightiest races. In “Eternals,” our heroes managed to thwart the birth of an Earth-bound Celestial, an occurrence known as The Emergence. Now, the petrified form of Tiamut lies in the heart of the ocean, serving as a pivotal plot point for “Captain America: Brave New World.
The squad comes back for “What If…?”, season 3, in an installment called “What If… The Emergence Destroyed the Earth.” This episode will illustrate the consequences if the Eternals failed to prevent Tiamut’s birth, adding depth to the Cosmic Entities’ lore within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s a smart move to reintroduce the characters without immediately planning for a sequel film. What’s even more intriguing is that season 3 of “What If…?” dedicates an entire episode to a lesser-known character, which serves as a comedic twist.

Making his grand entrance in a post-credits scene of “Guardians of the Galaxy” (2014), he was voiced by none other than Seth Green. Since then, Howard has graced our screens with multiple theatrical cameos in films like “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”, “Avengers: Endgame”, and most recently, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”.
It’s intriguing to contemplate whether the appearances of The Eternals and Howard the Duck in “What If…?” could pave the way for them to receive more focus within the Main Timeline. Considering that Season 3 is hinting at some significant advancements related to the classic “Secret Wars,” it wouldn’t be unexpected.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I can’t contain my excitement! Marvel’s “What If…?” is gearing up for its third season, and it’s set to premiere exclusively on Disney+ starting December 22.
