Marvel's What If...? to Crossover With the Marvel Comics Universe in Kahhori #1

As a fan who has been enamored with the vibrant world of Marvel Comics for decades, I am beyond thrilled about the upcoming debut of Kahhori in the Marvel Universe! Having grown up reading comics and watching Marvel shows, I have always yearned to see more diversity and representation within this beloved universe. With Kahhori, a Native-Mohawk woman voiced by the talented Devery Jacobs, we are not only getting a fresh, exciting character but also a much-needed representation of Indigenous peoples in the Marvel world.

Imagine if Kahhori, a Native-Mohawk woman who made her introduction in season 2 of the Marvel Animation series “What If…?”, took control over the Marvel Comics Universe. This fascinating character, voiced by Devery Jacobs from “Reservation Dogs”, will step into the main Marvel universe in the one-shot comic titled “Kahhori: World Shaper #1“.

On November 16th, during Native American Heritage Month, the Marvel Voices special will be penned by Ryan Little, co-creator of Kahhori, as well as debuting writers Arihhonni “Honni” David (known for I Like to Read books like ‘Who Will Win?’ and ‘The Good Game’), Kelly Lynne D’Angelo (author of Spirit Rangers and Dungeons & Dragons Candlekeep Mysteries), and will mark their first appearances in Marvel Comics. The artwork will be provided by David Cutler (from the Marvel’s Voices: Heritage special), Jim Terry (Marvel’s Chee’ilth), and a cover by Afua Richardson (Black Panther: World of Wakanda).

Marvel's What If...? to Crossover With the Marvel Comics Universe in Kahhori #1

The newly introduced comic series continues the storyline from Season 2’s episode titled “What If… Kahhori Altered the World?”, which unfolded in a universe where the Tesseract, or the Space Stone as it’s known, survived the destruction of Asgard at Surtur’s hands and fell to Earth within the territory of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy before European colonization. Kahhori made another appearance in the Season 2 finale, teaming up with Captain Carter (played by Hayley Atwell) when Doctor Strange Supreme (portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch) started capturing these ‘universe-threatening’ variants.

Title character Kahhori, the renowned Mohawk warrior, descends into the Sky World and captures our affection in her initial appearance fending off invaders. She’s previously thwarted a mad Doctor Strange and established tranquility in her realm. Now, we wonder… What next? Marvel Comics introduces this dynamic character to the 616 universe! A menace from Sky World sends her crashing into the bustling streets of Hell’s Kitchen, New York City. Despite the culture shock, it’s clear that this peculiar enemy will pose a far greater challenge as they wreak havoc across the city. This Marvel’s Voices anthology offers an extraordinary celebration of Indigenous heritage and introduces some fresh, talented creators, alongside exciting guest stars, in this thrilling new chapter for one of the most captivating characters to arise from the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

In a conversation with Marvel.com, it was revealed that “Kahhori,” which sounds like ‘KAH-HORTI,’ is an actual name from the Wolf Clan, translating to either ‘she incites the woods’ or someone who inspires others within the community. This character was carefully crafted by Marvel Animation team members such as director Bryan Andrews, executive producer A.C. Bradley, and story editor Matthew Chauncey, in close consultation with Mohawk Nation members, historian Doug George, and language expert Cecelia King, to maintain cultural accuracy.

Marvel Voices: Kahhori: Reshaper of Worlds #1 goes on sale November 16th from Marvel Comics.
